We propose a simple three-step method to estimate the cross-sectional interdependence in a customary network econometric model with an unobserved network and a large T. First, we estimate the reduced-form model to construct instruments for the endogenous peer outcomes. Second, we use two-stage least squares to estimate the direct and contextual effects of the exogenous regressors, as well as the endogenous peer effect. Third, we estimate the network weight matrix. Monte Carlo results for small- to medium-sized samples indicate that the estimators of the parameters of interest have small biases and root mean squared errors. We apply the approach to estimate the network structure of the 100 largest listed depository institutions worldwide using daily data over 2011-2020. This reveals the detailed structure of interbank network links and identifies influential banks in the data, of which some but not all are Global Systemically Important Banks designated by the Financial Stability Board.

We study linear regression models with clustered data, high-dimensional controls, and intricate exclusion restrictions. We propose a correctly centered internal instrument IV estimator that accommodates a broad class of exclusion restrictions and allows within-cluster dependence. The estimator admits a simple leave-out interpretation and is computationally tractable. We derive a central limit theorem for the associated quadratic form and propose a robust variance estimator.…

We develop a novel methodology for estimation and inference in high-dimensional panel network models with latent dual structures. The framework allows outcomes to be affected simultaneously by positive and negative interaction channels, accommodating settings in which some interactions reinforce outcomes while others generate competition and displacement effects. The proposed method identifies and estimates the network directly from the structural model using observed data…

This paper proposes a sieve generalized method of moments (GMM) method for the estimation of spatial autoregressive panel data models with nonparametric endogenous effect. The new estimator incorporates both linear moments based on the orthogonality of the exogenous regressors with the model disturbances and quadratic moments based on the properties of idiosyncratic errors. We establish the consistency and asymptotic normality of the sieve GMM estimator and show that it is…
Abstract We examine the impact of government funding for R&D—and defense-related R&D in particular—on privately conducted R&D and its ultimate effect on productivity growth. We estimate longitudinal models that relate privately funded R&D to lagged government-funded R&D using industry-country level data from OECD countries and firm level data from France. To deal with the potentially endogenous allocation of government R&D funds, we use changes in predicted defense R&D as an…
无需指定网络结构的同伴效应检验
This paper proposes an Anderson–Rubin (AR) test for the presence of peer effects in panel data without the need to specify the network structure. The unrestricted model of our test is a linear panel data model of social interactions with dyad-specific peer effect coefficients for all potential peers. The proposed AR test evaluates if these peer effect coefficients are all zero. As the number of peer effect coefficients increases with the sample size, so does the number of…
