Asymptotics of Cointegration Tests for High-Dimensional Var(k)

Abstract The paper studies nonstationary high-dimensional vector autoregressions of order k, VAR(k). Additional deterministic terms such as trend or seasonality are allowed. The number of time periods, T, and the number of coordinates, N, are assumed to be large and of the same order. Under this regime the first-order asymptotics of the Johansen likelihood ratio (LR), Pillai-Bartlett, and Hotelling-Lawley tests for cointegration are derived: The test statistics converge to…

Job Loss, Unemployment Insurance, and Health: Evidence from Brazil

Abstract We study the health impacts of job loss and unemployment insurance (UI) among Brazilian workers, using unique administrative data linking employment, hospitalizations, health insurance, and mortality records over 17 years. Leveraging mass layoffs for identification, we find that job loss raises hospitalization (+33%) and mortality (+23%) risks for men, with no significant effects for women. Impacts are pervasive across age, income, and education levels, with…

Return to Office and the Tenure Distribution

Abstract Debates over return-to-office mandates have intensified since the COVID-19 pandemic ended, though their economic implications remain poorly understood. Using large-scale resume data, we analyze how these policies affect employee tenure and seniority at three large U.S. tech companies: Microsoft, SpaceX, and Apple. Employing a distributional synthetic controls framework, we estimate a reduction in tenure and seniority at firms returning to the office. We extend the…

From Micro to Macro in an Equilibrium Diffusion Model

Abstract We quantify the benefits of better firm-to-firm matching in an aggregate diffusion model where individuals acquire profitable knowledge from others. We estimate the model using a small-scale program in Kenya that creates new opportunities for firm managers to interact. Aggregate gains from the program depend on the relative importance of meeting a high-knowledge firm versus learning within that meeting. We show how moments from the intervention identify these…

The Value of Piped Water and Sewers: Evidence from 19th Century Chicago

Abstract We estimate the impact of piped water and sewers on property values in late 19th century Chicago. The cost of sewer construction depends sensitively on imperceptible variation in elevation, and such variation delays water and sewer service to part of the city. This delay provides quasirandom variation for causal estimates. We extrapolate ate estimates from our natural experiment to the area treated with water and sewer service during 1874–1880 using a new estimator.…

On Recoding Ordered Treatments as Binary Indicators

Abstract Researchers using instrumental variables to investigate ordered treatments often recode treatment into an indicator for any exposure. We investigate this estimand under the assumption that the instruments shift compliers from no treatment to some but not from some treatment to more. We show that when extensive margin compliers only (EMCO) exist, this estimand captures a weighted average of treatment effects that can be partially unbundled into each complier group’s…

Synthetic Controls for Experimental Design

Abstract This paper studies how to design experiments when the experimental units are large aggregate entities (e.g., markets), and only one or a small number of units can be treated. We propose a class of non-randomized experimental designs using the synthetic control method, which jointly selects treated units and untreated units to serve as a comparison group. We analyze the properties of estimators under these synthetic control designs and develop new inferential…

Was Javert Right to Be Suspicious? Marginal Treatment Effects with Duration Outcomes

Abstract We identify the distributional and quantile marginal treatment effect functions when the outcome is right-censored. Our method requires a conditionally exogenous instrument and random censoring. We propose asymptotically consistent semi-parametric estimators and valid inferential procedures for the target functions . To illustrate, we evaluate the effect of alternative sentences (fines and community service vs. no punishment) on recidivism in Brazil. Our results…

Firm Concentration and Job Design: The Case of Schedule Flexible Work Arrangements

Abstract We study how employer concentration affects job design, focusing on schedule flexibility as a non-wage job attribute. Using the full text of 46 million UK job vacancies from 2014–2019, we construct new measures of flexible work arrangements using supervised machine learning and large-language-model—assisted annotations. Adopting an instrumental variable strategy using a Bartik-style prediction of the change in employer concentration based on nationwide hiring…

Quantile Effects in Discrete Choice with Social Interactions

Abstract This paper provides a method to study quantile effects in discrete choice with social interactions. The method is based on a behavioral social interactions model from quantile preference in decision making and demonstrates peer effects on different quantiles of discrete outcomes. The peer effects parameters are estimated by a nested pseudoscore (NPS) approach, which is developed to tackle the computational burden pertaining to the social interactions model.…

Weak Identification in Low-Dimensional Factor Models with One or Two Factors

Abstract This paper describes how to reparametrize low-dimensional factor models with one or two factors to fit weak identification theory developed for generalized method of moments models. Some identification-robust tests, here called “plug-in” tests, require a reparametrization to distinguish weakly identified parameters from strongly identified parameters. The reparametrizations in this paper make plug-in tests available for subvector hypotheses in low-dimensional factor…

Difference-in-Differences Estimators of Intertemporal Treatment Effects

Abstract We study treatment-effect estimation using panel data. The treatment may be nonbinary, nonabsorbing, and the outcome may be affected by treatment lags. We make a parallel-trends assumption and propose event-study estimators of the effect of being exposed to a weakly higher treatment dose for ℓ periods. We also propose normalized estimators that estimate a weighted average of the effects of the current treatment and its lags. We also analyze commonly used two-way…

Robust Design and Evaluation of Predictive Algorithms under Unobserved Confounding

Abstract Predictive algorithms inform consequential decisions in settings with selective labels: outcomes are observed only for units selected by past decision makers. This creates an identification problem under unobserved confounding — when selected and unselected units differ in unobserved ways that affect outcomes. We propose a framework for robust design and evaluation of predictive algorithms that bounds how much outcomes may differ between selected and unselected…

Public School Funding, School Quality, and Adult Crime

Abstract This paper asks whether increasing public school funding can be an effective long-run crime-prevention strategy in the United States. Specifically, we examine the effect of increases in funding early in children’s lives on the likelihood that they are arrested as adults. We exploit quasi-experimental variation in public school funding, leveraging two natural experiments in Michigan and a novel administrative data set linking the universe of Michigan public school…

Improving Estimation Efficiency via Regression-Adjustment in Covariate-Adaptive Randomizations with Imperfect Compliance

Abstract We investigate how to improve efficiency using regression adjustments with covariates in covariate-adaptive randomizations (CARs) with imperfect subject compliance. Our regression-adjusted estimators, which are based on the doubly robust moment for local average treatment effects, are consistent and asymptotically normal even with heterogeneous probabilities of assignment and misspecified regression adjustments. We propose an optimal but potentially misspecified…

Examining Selection Pressures in the Publication Process through the Lens of Sniff Tests

Abstract Economics papers increasingly report balance, pretrend, placebo, and other “sniff tests,” rejection of which is bad news for authors, undermining the credibility of their main results. We derive nonparametric bounds on the latent proportion of significant sniff tests removed by the publication process (whether by p-hacking or relegation to the file drawer) and the proportion whose significance was due to true misspecification, not bad luck. Using a hand-collected…

Inflation, War Bonds, and Voter Backlash in the 1950s

Abstract We study the role of war bonds and inflation in post-WWII federal elections. After WWII, major bouts of inflation in 1946-48 and 1950-51 depressed the real returns of the bonds sold to households during the war. In a difference-in-differences framework, we find that counties with higher war bond purchases shifted their votes towards the Republican Party in postwar elections. To address the endogeneity of war bond purchases, we use an instrumental variables design,…

Job Transitions and Employee Earnings after Acquisitions: Linking Corporate and Worker Outcomes

Abstract This paper connects changes in employer characteristics through job transitions to employee earnings following mergers and acquisitions. Using firm balance sheet data linked to individual earnings data in Canada and a matched difference-in-differences design, we find that earnings of workers at target firms decrease after M&As relative to control workers, largely driven by those who move to other firms. Workers leaving targets move to larger and more profitable…

Firm Responses to Hiring and Investment Subsidies: Regression Discontinuity Evidence from the California Competes Tax Credit

Abstract We examine firm responses to state hiring and investment subsidies. We leverage institutional features of the California Competes Tax Credit (CCTC), a large-scale business incentive program that incorporates best practices from prior job creation policies. The CCTC award selection procedure combines formula-based and discretionary components. Leveraging applicant score eligibility cutoffs in a regression discontinuity design and taking advantage of rich longitudinal…

The Employment Consequences of Anti-Dumping Tariffs: Lessons from Brazil

Abstract How do import tariffs affect employment? We develop an empirical strategy to identify the effects of tariffs using a difference-in-differences strategy, comparing antidumping (AD) investigations resulting in AD tariffs to those not resulting in AD tariffs. We find that an AD tariff decreases imports and increases employment in the protected sector. Moreover, employment in downstream firms decreases, while upstream firms are unaffected because the protected sector…

Identifying Causal Effects in Information Provision Experiments

Abstract Standard estimators in information provision experiments place more weight on individuals who update their beliefs more in response to new information. This paper shows that, in practice, these individuals who update the most have the weakest causal e!ects of beliefs on outcomes. Standard estimators therefore understate these causal e!ects. I propose an alternative local least squares (LLS) estimator that recovers a representative unweighted average e!ect in a broad…

Inference for Heterogeneous Effects using Low-Rank Estimation of Factor Slopes

Abstract We study a panel data model with heterogeneous effects, allowing slopes to vary across individuals and time. To reduce dimensionality, we assume these slopes follow a factor structure, so slope matrices can be estimated via low-rank regularized regression. We propose a multi-step estimation procedure incorporating sample splitting and partialing-out to enable valid inference after penalized estimation. We establish the asymptotic normality of the resulting…

Returns to Political Contributions in Local Housing Markets

Abstract This paper examines how politically connected firms shape housing supply in U.S. cities. Using new data on campaign donations to U.S. mayors and a regression discontinuity design, I present three findings. First, developers connected to the mayor sell more new housing units. Second, more sales of new housing by connected developers coincide with higher local housing supply: cities where mayors received more developer donations issue nearly 70 percent more permits…

Identification of Semiparametric Panel Multinomial Choice Models with Infinite-Dimensional Fixed Effects

Abstract This paper proposes a robust method for semiparametric identification and estimation in panel multinomial choice models, where we allow for infinite-dimensional fixed effects that enter into consumer utilities in an additively nonseparable way, thus incorporating rich forms of unobserved heterogeneity. Our identification strategy exploits multivariate monotonicity in parametric indices, and uses the logical contraposition of an intertemporal inequality on choice…
