Clustering in high-dimensions poses many statistical challenges. While traditional distance-based clustering methods are computationally feasible, they lack probabilistic interpretation and rely on heuristics for estimation of the number of clusters. On the other hand, probabilistic model-based clustering techniques often fail to scale and devising algorithms that are able to effectively explore the posterior space is an open problem. Based on recent developments in Bayesian distance-based clustering, we propose a hybrid solution that entails defining a likelihood on pairwise distances between observations. The novelty of the approach consists in including both cohesion and repulsion terms in the likelihood, which allows for cluster identifiability. This implies that clusters are composed of objects which have small dissimilarities among themselves (cohesion) and similar dissimilarities to observations in other clusters (repulsion). We show how this modelling strategy has interesting connection with existing proposals in the literature. The proposed method is computationally efficient and applicable to a wide variety of scenarios. We demonstrate the approach in simulation and an application in digital numismatics. Supplementary Material with code is available online.

Many treatments have effects that plausibly vary by latent classes. For example, the effect of personalized video recommendations may be stronger for users who seek a new discovery than for users seeking to rewatch something familiar. In the context of user journeys on digital platforms, we can conceptualize user moods as dynamic latent states that lead to distinct action distributions. Because mood is unobserved, we infer it from a user's pre-treatment actions using a…

Ultra-high-dimensional genomic studies require simultaneous identification of sparse signals, control of spurious discoveries, and computationally feasible inference when the number of predictors can reach hundreds of thousands or more. We propose Bayesian Univariate-Guided Sparse Regression (BUGS), a global--local shrinkage framework that incorporates marginal association information directly into the prior through continuous modulation of shrinkage. By embedding univariate…

We answer the question posed in the title with a nonlinear mixed-frequency vector autoregression, estimated with Bayesian additive regression trees. The model combines monthly macro-financial variables with quarterly bank lending survey data, and identifies the dynamic responses from high-frequency policy surprises. Sign asymmetry dominates; a tightening produces monetary policy transmission mostly in line with the theoretical predictions, whereas easing of any size produces…

Randomized experiments with ordinal outcomes are common across scientific applications, but conventional causal estimands such as the average treatment effect are difficult to interpret because ordinal categories lack meaningful numerical spacing. Two interpretable estimands, the probabilities that the treatment is beneficial and strictly beneficial, depend on the joint distribution of the potential outcomes and are therefore not identifiable from observed data. The sharp…
BGM-IV:面向高维协变量工具变量回归的贝叶斯生成建模
Instrumental-variable (IV) regression enables causal estimation under endogeneity, but modern IV problems often involve nonlinear structural effects and high-dimensional covariates. Existing methods typically operate in observed or generic learned feature spaces, and they often yield point estimates without uncertainty quantification. We introduce BGM-IV, a Bayesian generative modeling approach that performs nonlinear IV regression through posterior inference in a causally…

Many studies expose units to several binary treatments at once and record several correlated outcomes, yet analysts usually estimate one treatment's average effect on one outcome at a time -- discarding how treatments interact and how their effects vary across units. We introduce the factorial multivariate Bayesian causal forest, a Bayesian nonparametric model that decomposes the factorial response surface over the treatment lattice into a prognostic sum-of-trees plus one…
