This paper proposes a novel finite-state Markov chain approximation method for Markov processes with continuous support, providing both an optimal grid and a transition probability matrix. The method can be used for multivariate processes and processes with time-varying components. It is based on minimizing the information loss between a Hidden Markov Model and the true data-generating process. We provide sufficient conditions under which this information loss can be made arbitrarily small, provided enough grid points are used. We compare our method to existing methods through the lens of an asset-pricing model and a lifecycle consumption-savings model. We find that our method can lead to more parsimonious discretizations and more accurate solutions, and that the discretization matters for the welfare costs of risk, marginal propensities to consume, and the amount of wealth inequality a life-cycle model can generate.
用核回归估计线性模型中不同光滑度的时变参数
We study kernel-based estimation of nonparametric time-varying parameters (TVPs) in linear models. Our contributions are threefold. First, we establish consistency and asymptotic normality of the kernel-based estimator for a broad class of TVPs including deterministic smooth functions, the rescaled random walk, structural breaks, the threshold model and their mixtures. Our analysis exploits the smoothness of the TVP. Second, we show that the bandwidth rate must be determined…
时变向量误差修正模型:估计与推断
This paper considers a time-varying vector error-correction model that allows for different time series behaviors (e.g., unit-root and locally stationary processes) to interact with each other and co-exist. From a practical perspective, this framework can be used to estimate shifts in the predictability of non-stationary variables, and test whether economic theories hold periodically, etc. We first develop a time-varying Granger Representation Theorem, which facilitates the…
零利率下限下的平滑影子利率动态 Nelson–Siegel 模型
We propose a smooth shadow-rate version of the dynamic Nelson-Siegel (DNS) model to analyze the term structure of interest rates during a zero lower bound (ZLB) period.By relaxing the no-arbitrage restriction, our shadow-rate model becomes highly tractable with a closed-form yield curve expression. This permits the implementation of readily available DNS extensions such as allowing for time-varying parameters and the integration of macroeconomic variables.Using U.S. Treasury…
价格股利比与长期股票收益:得分驱动的状态空间模型
Abstract–In this article, we develop a general framework to analyze state space models with time-varying system matrices, where time variation is driven by the score of the conditional likelihood. We derive a new filter that allows for the simultaneous estimation of the state vector and of the time-varying matrices. We use this method to study the time-varying relationship between the price dividend ratio, expected stock returns and expected dividend growth in the United…
This paper studies how monetary policy jointly affects asset prices and the real economy in the United States. I develop an estimator that uses high-frequency surprises as a proxy for the structural monetary policy shocks. This is achieved by integrating the surprises into a vector autoregressive model as an exogenous variable. I use current short-term rate surprises because these are least affected by an information effect. When allowing for time-varying model parameters, I…

Summary We propose a novel class of dynamic shrinkage processes for Bayesian time series and regression analysis. Building on a global–local framework of prior construction, in which continuous scale mixtures of Gaussian distributions are employed for both desirable shrinkage properties and computational tractability, we model dependence between the local scale parameters. The resulting processes inherit the desirable shrinkage behaviour of popular global–local priors, such…
