Local projections (LPs) have become a standard tool for estimating dynamic effects in macroeconomics and are typically implemented using ordinary least squares (OLS) for a given lag order. We propose an alternative approach that exploits additional lags as excluded instrumental variables (IVs). Under a finite-order model with martingale-difference shocks, the resulting (optimally weighted) IV estimator is never asymptotically less efficient than OLS and, as we show, can deliver substantial efficiency gains when data are persistent. For the unit-root AR(1) data with i.i.d. errors, our baseline IV estimator (with one overidentifying restriction) has asymptotic variance $2-h^{-1}$, compared with $h$, the asymptotic variance of the OLS lag-augmented estimator in Montiel Olea and Plagborg-Møller (2021), for an integer propagation horizon $h$. We then develop IV-based LP inference that is robust to unknown persistence and moderate local model misspecification, whereas the recursive VAR-based inference is generally not robust to the latter. We also characterize the trade-off between the degree of misspecification and the number of additional lag controls. Through simulations and an empirical application, we demonstrate that the proposed method can yield meaningfully shorter confidence intervals for impulse responses than OLS in finite samples.

We propose a dependent wild bootstrap method based on local projections for computing the joint asymptotic distribution of parameter estimates in structural vector autoregression models. This procedure can be applied to the raw data in levels without pretesting while remaining robust to unit roots, cointegration, polynomial trends, and conditionally heteroscedastic shocks in a general form. We show how knowledge of the joint asymptotic distribution in persistent data setups…
协整向量自回归过程的统一推断
Uniformly valid inference for cointegrated vector autoregressive processes has so far proven difficult due to certain discontinuities arising in the asymptotic distribution of the least squares estimator. We extend asymptotic results from the univariate case to multiple dimensions and show how inference can be based on these results. Furthermore, we show that lag augmentation and a recent instrumental variable procedure can also yield uniformly valid tests and confidence…

观察性时间序列动态因果效应的半参数推断
In observational time series, statistical inference for dynamic causal effects of a one-time intervention across horizons is complicated by high-dimensional observed pre-treatment information, unmeasured confounding, and serial dependence. To address these challenges, we develop a semiparametric framework for inference from a single serially dependent time series, integrating debiased machine learning with instrumental variables through buffered block cross-fitting. Under…
时间序列中的动态局部平均处理效应
This paper discusses identification, estimation, and inference on dynamic local average treatment effects (LATEs) in instrumental variables (IVs) settings. First, we show that compliers--observations whose treatment status is affected by the instrument--can be identified individually in time series data using smoothness assumptions and local comparisons of treatment assignments. Second, we show that this result enables not only better interpretability of IV estimates but…
货币冲击对宏观经济星号变量的影响:SMUC-IV 框架
This paper proposes a structural multivariate unobserved components model with external instrument (SMUC-IV) to investigate the effects of monetary policy shocks on key U.S. macroeconomic "stars"-namely, the level of potential output, the growth rate of potential output, trend inflation, and the neutral interest rate. A key feature of our approach is the use of an external instrument to identify monetary policy shocks within the multivariate unobserved components modeling…
