This paper develops likelihood-based estimation for parametric rational inattention--additive random utility models. We establish consistency and asymptotic normality of the exact maximum likelihood estimator and provide conditions under which the simulated estimator shares its asymptotic distribution. To implement estimation, we develop Newton--BA, a KKT-guided hybrid of Newton--Raphson and Blahut--Arimoto (BA). The algorithm accommodates both interior and boundary solutions and substantially improves computational efficiency relative to direct BA while preserving numerical accuracy. Monte Carlo simulations show that parameter recovery improves with sample size and that confidence-interval coverage is generally close to the nominal $95$ percent level. Finally, we compare our model with no- and perfect-information logit benchmarks in an empirically calibrated ModeCanada experiment. Our model achieves similar in-sample likelihood fit to perfect-information logit but more accurately recovers key preference parameters, choice probabilities, and responses to travel-time changes.
扰动效用模型的 Fenchel–Young 估计量
Perturbed Utility Models (PUMs) represent discrete choice as utility maximization under convex perturbation or regularization, encompassing a broad class of choice models, including Multinomial Logit (MNL) and models that permit zero choice probabilities. Because, for general perturbations, maximum likelihood may be non-convex, and the negative log-likelihood is infinite when a sparse model assigns zero probability to an observed choice, we specialize the Fenchel--Young…
将基础模型预测嵌入具有结构保证的离散选择模型
Tabular foundation models achieve strong accuracy on choice prediction tasks, but their predictions often violate the economic logic those tasks require: raising a price can increase predicted demand, implied willingness-to-pay estimates are frequently negative or implausible, and unavailable alternatives receive nonzero probability. We propose a two-stage adapter that takes a foundation model's predicted choice probabilities as a precomputed feature and embeds them inside a…
Abstract We propose a new sequential Efficient Pseudo-Likelihood (k-EPL) estimator for dynamic discrete choice games of incomplete information. k-EPL considers the joint behaviour of multiple players simultaneously, as opposed to individual responses to other agents’ equilibrium play. This, in addition to reframing the problem from conditional choice probability (CCP) space to value function space, yields a computationally tractable, stable, and efficient estimator. We show…
差异化产品需求系统的最大似然估计
We discuss estimation of the differentiated products demand system of Berry et al (1995) (BLP) by maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). We derive the maximum likelihood estimator in the case where prices are endogenously generated by firms that set prices in Bertrand-Nash equilibrium. In Monte Carlo simulations the MLE estimator outperforms the best-practice GMM estimator on both bias and mean squared error when the model is correctly specified. This remains true under some…
Abstract We study the first-order asymptotic properties of a class of estimators of the structural parameters in dynamic discrete choice games. We consider $K$-stage policy iteration (PI) estimators, where $K$ denotes the number of PIs employed in the estimation. This class nests several estimators proposed in the literature. By considering a “pseudo likelihood” criterion function, our estimator becomes the $K$-pseudo maximum likelihood (PML) estimator in Aguirregabiria and…
随机系数多项 Logit 模型中的惩罚似然参数选择
This paper is about estimating a random coefficients logit model in which the distribution of each coefficient is characterized by finitely many parameters, some of which may be zero. The paper gives conditions under which, with probability approaching 1 as the sample size increases, penalized maximum likelihood (PML) estimation with the adaptive LASSO (AL) penalty distinguishes correctly between zero and non-zero parameters. The paper also gives conditions under which PML…
