Empirical Likelihood for a Varying Coefficient Model With Longitudinal Data
In this article local empirical likelihood-based inference for a varying coefficient model with longitudinal data is investigated. First, we show that the naive empirical likelihood ratio is asymptotically standard chi-squared when undersmoothing is employed. The ratio is self-scale invariant and the plug-in estimate of the limiting variance is not needed. Second, to enhance the performance of the ratio, mean-corrected and residual-adjusted empirical likelihood ratios are…
AN EFFICIENT LINEAR GMM ESTIMATOR FOR THE COVARIANCE STATIONARY AR(1)/UNIT ROOT MODEL FOR PANEL DATA
This paper considers generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation of the inclusive panel AR(1) model that contains the covariance stationary panel AR(1) model and the panel AR(1) model with a unit root as special cases. The paper presents a two-step optimal linear GMM (OLGMM) estimator for the inclusive model that is asymptotically equivalent to the optimal nonlinear GMM estimator of Ahn and Schmidt (1997, Journal of Econometrics 76, 309–321) when the data are covariance…
Do Stockholders Share Risk More Effectively than Nonstockholders?
This paper analyzes the extent of risk-sharing among stockholders and nonstockholders. To evaluate the empirical importance of market incompleteness, it is essential to determine whether idiosyncratic shocks are important for the wealthy who have access to better insurance opportunities, but also face different risks, than the average household. We study a model where each period households decide whether to participate in the stock market by paying a fixed cost. Due to this…
Point estimation with exponentially tilted empirical likelihood
Parameters defined via general estimating equations (GEE) can be estimated by maximizing the empirical likelihood (EL). Newey and Smith [Econometrica 72 (2004) 219–255] have recently shown that this EL estimator exhibits desirable higher-order asymptotic properties, namely, that its O(n−1) bias is small and that bias-corrected EL is higher-order efficient. Although EL possesses these properties when the model is correctly specified, this paper shows that, in the presence of…

Empirical Likelihood Inference in Nonlinear Errors-in-Covariables Models With Validation Data
In this article we study inference in parametric–nonparametric errors-in-covariables regression models using an empirical likelihood approach based on validation data. It is shown that the asymptotic behavior of the proposed estimator depends on the ratio of the sizes of the primary sample and the validation sample, respectively. Unlike cases without measurement errors, the limit distribution of the estimator is no longer tractable and cannot be used for constructing…
Estimation of a covariance matrix with zeros
We consider estimation of the covariance matrix of a multivariate random vector under the constraint that certain covariances are zero. We first present an algorithm, which we call iterative conditional fitting, for computing the maximum likelihood estimate of the constrained covariance matrix, under the assumption of multivariate normality. In contrast to previous approaches, this algorithm has guaranteed convergence properties. Dropping the assumption of multivariate…
Empirical-Likelihood-Based Inference in Missing Response Problems and Its Application in Observational Studies
Summary The problem of missing response data is ubiquitous in medical and social science studies. In the case of responses that are missing at random (depending on some covariate information), analyses focused only on the complete data may lead to biased results. Various debias methods have been extensively studied in the literature, particularly the weighting method that was motivated by Horvitz and Thompson's estimators. To improve efficiency, Robins, Rotnitzky and Zhao…
Marginal Regression Analysis of Longitudinal Data With Time-Dependent Covariates: A Generalized Method-of-Moments Approach
Summary We develop a new approach to using estimating equations to estimate marginal regression models for longitudinal data with time-dependent covariates. Our approach classifies time-dependent covariates into three types—types I, II and III. The type of covariate determines what estimating equations can be used involving the covariate. We use the generalized method of moments to make optimal use of the estimating equations that are made available by the covariates.…
Instrumental Variable Estimation of Nonlinear Errors-in-Variables Models
This paper establishes that instruments enable the identification of nonparametric regression models in the presence of measurement error by providing a closed form solution for the regression function in terms of Fourier transforms of conditional expectations of observable variables. For parametrically specified regression functions, we propose a root n consistent and asymptotically normal estimator that takes the familiar form of a generalized method of moments estimator…
Codependence in cointegrated autoregressive models
Abstract This paper investigates codependent cycles, i.e., transitory components that react to common stimuli in a similar, although not necessarily synchronous fashion. Unlike previous studies, the methodology of this paper allows FIML estimation of the restricted VAR/VECM and therefore the extraction of the unobserved codependent cyclical components via a Beveridge‐Nelson decomposition. It is further shown that the number and order of cofeature combinations that yield the…
A frequency domain empirical likelihood for short- and long-range dependence
This paper introduces a version of empirical likelihood based on the periodogram and spectral estimating equations. This formulation handles dependent data through a data transformation (i.e., a Fourier transform) and is developed in terms of the spectral distribution rather than a time domain probability distribution. The asymptotic properties of frequency domain empirical likelihood are studied for linear time processes exhibiting both short- and long-range dependence. The…
AN ALTERNATIVE DERIVATION OF MUNDLAK'S FIXED EFFECTS RESULTS USING SYSTEM ESTIMATION
Mundlak (1978, Econometrica 46, 69–85) showed that the fixed effects estimator can be obtained as generalized least squares (GLS) for a panel regression model where the individual effects are random but are all hopelessly correlated with the regressors. This result was obtained by partitioned inversion after substituting the reduced form expression for the individual effects as a function of the means of all the regressors. This note shows that Mundlak's result can be…
Empirical-type likelihoods allowing posterior credible sets with frequentist validity: Higher-order asymptotics
With reference to a general class of empirical-type likelihoods, we develop higher-order asymptotics for the frequentist coverage of Bayesian credible sets based on posterior quantiles and highest posterior density. These asymptotics, in turn, characterise members of the class that allow approximate frequentist validity of such sets. It is seen that the usual empirical likelihood does not enjoy this property up to the order of approximation considered here.

Empirical Likelihood Confidence Regions in a Partially Linear Single-Index Model
Summary Empirical-likelihood-based inference for the parameters in a partially linear single-index model is investigated. Unlike existing empirical likelihood procedures for other simpler models, if there is no bias correction the limit distribution of the empirical likelihood ratio cannot be asymptotically tractable. To attack this difficulty we propose a bias correction to achieve the standard χ2-limit. The bias-corrected empirical likelihood ratio shares some of the…
GENERALIZED EMPIRICAL LIKELIHOOD INFERENCE FOR NONLINEAR AND TIME SERIES MODELS UNDER WEAK IDENTIFICATION
This paper studies robust inference methods for nonlinear moment restriction models with weakly identified parameters in time series contexts. Our methods are based on generalized empirical likelihood with kernel smoothing. The proposed test statistics, which follow the standard χ2 limiting distributions, are robust to weak identification and dependent data. The author is deeply grateful to Bruce Hansen, John Kennan, and Gautam Tripathi for their guidance and time. Comments…
EMPIRICAL LIKELIHOOD FOR GARCH MODELS
This paper develops an empirical likelihood approach for regular generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models and GARCH models with unit roots. For regular GARCH models, it is shown that the log empirical likelihood ratio statistic asymptotically follows a χ2 distribution. For GARCH models with unit roots, two versions of the empirical likelihood methods, the least squares score and the maximum likelihood score functions, are considered. For both…
Fitting an error distribution in some heteroscedastic time series models
This paper addresses the problem of fitting a known distribution to the innovation distribution in a class of stationary and ergodic time series models. The asymptotic null distribution of the usual Kolmogorov–Smirnov test based on the residuals generally depends on the underlying model parameters and the error distribution. To overcome the dependence on the underlying model parameters, we propose that tests be based on a vector of certain weighted residual empirical…
SOME IDENTIFICATION ISSUES IN NONPARAMETRIC LINEAR MODELS WITH ENDOGENOUS REGRESSORS
In applied work economists often seek to relate a given response variable y to some causal parameter μ* associated with it. This parameter usually represents a summarization based on some explanatory variables of the distribution of y, such as a regression function, and treating it as a conditional expectation is central to its identification and estimation. However, the interpretation of μ* as a conditional expectation breaks down if some or all of the explanatory variables…
