Causal Inference Using Antidotal Variables

利用解偏变量进行因果推断

This paper shows that incorporating what we call antidotal variables (AV) into a causal treatment effects analysis can with one cross-sectional regression identify the causal effect, the spillover effect, as well as possible biases from selectivity. We apply the AV technique to analyze leave taking arising from the California Paid Family Leave (CPFL) program. Our analysis yields between a 55% and 70% larger treatment effect than the traditional DID methods, which we…

Using Distribution Regression Difference‐in‐Differences to Evaluate the Effects of a Minimum Wage Introduction on the Distributions of Wages, Earnings, and Working Hours

用分布回归双重差分评估最低工资引入对工资、收入与工时分布的影响

ABSTRACT We estimate the causal effects of the introduction of the minimum wage in Germany on the distributions of hourly wages, monthly earnings, and hours worked, combining rich large‐scale data sources. We compare linear and non‐linear versions of distribution regression difference‐in‐differences (DR‐DiD) and also estimate bivariate DR‐DiD. We show that the introduction of the minimum wage in 2015 led to shifts in low hourly wages around the minimum wage threshold…

Changes-in-Changes for Ordered Choice Models with Underreporting

存在少报的有序选择模型中的变化中的变化

We develop a Difference-in-Differences framework for discrete, ordered outcomes subject to underreporting. Such outcomes commonly arise in self-reported surveys on socially undesirable or stigmatized behaviors, where respondents may conceal their true behavior. For a discrete Changes-in-Changes model that is shown to admit an equivalent threshold-crossing representation, we derive nonparametric bounds for the counterfactual and factual outcome distributions as well as for…

Geodesic difference-in-differences

测地线双重差分

Summary Difference-in-differences (DID) is a widely used quasi-experimental design for causal inference, traditionally applied to scalar or Euclidean outcomes, while extensions to outcomes residing in non-Euclidean spaces remain limited. Existing methods for such outcomes have primarily focused on univariate distributions, leveraging linear operations in the space of quantile functions, but these approaches cannot be directly extended to outcomes in general metric spaces. In…

Quantile treatment effects in difference-in-discontinuities designs

Summary This paper studies identification and doubly robust (DR) estimation of quantile treatment effects (QTEs) in difference-in-discontinuities (diff-in-disc) designs when a new treatment is introduced in the post period and a confounding discontinuous policy is present in both periods. We show that QTEs are point identified under a conditional stable-distributional-effect assumption for the confounding treatment, a restriction that is analogous to the distributional…

Difference-in-differences with interference

存在干扰时的双重差分

In many scenarios, such as the evaluation of place-based policies, potential outcomes depend not only on the unit’s own treatment but also on its neighbors’ treatments. Despite this, “difference-in-differences” (DID) type estimators typically ignore such interference among neighbors. I show in this paper that the canonical DID estimators generally fail to identify interesting causal effects in the presence of neighborhood interference. To incorporate interference structure…

Estimation and inference on average treatment effect in percentage points under heterogeneity

异质性下百分点平均处理效应的估计与推断

In semi-logarithmic regressions, treatment coefficients are often interpreted as approximations of an average treatment effect (ATE) in percentage points. This paper highlights the overlooked bias of this approximation under treatment effect heterogeneity, arising from Jensen’s inequality. The issue is particularly relevant for difference-in-differences designs with log-transformed outcomes and staggered treatment adoption, where treatment effects may vary across groups and…

Gambling away stability: Sports betting’s impact on vulnerable households

We estimate the causal effect of online sports betting on households’ investment, spending, and debt management decisions using household transaction data and a staggered difference-in-differences framework. Following legalization, sports betting spreads quickly, with both the number of participants and frequency of bets increasing over time. This increase does not displace other gambling or consumption but significantly reduces savings, as risky bets crowd out positive…

Triply Robust Panel Estimators

三重稳健面板估计量

ABSTRACT This paper studies estimation of causal effects in a panel data setting. We introduce a new estimator, the Triply Robust Panel (TROP) estimator, that combines a flexible model for the potential outcomes based on a low‐rank factor structure on top of a two‐way‐fixed effect specification, with unit weights intended to upweight units similar to the treated units and time weights intended to upweight time periods close to the treated time periods. We study the…

A Simple Transformation Approach to Difference-in-Differences Estimation for Panel Data

面板双重差分估计的简单变换方法

In the case of panel data with staggered interventions, we propose a simple time-series transformation that can be combined with various treatment effect estimators. The transformation is at the unit level, and simply requires computing the average outcome prior to an intervention, subtracting it from a post-treatment outcome, and then carefully selecting the control units in each time period. We show that under no anticipation and parallel trends assumptions, the cohort…

A Joint Test of Unconfoundedness and Common Trends

无混杂与共同趋势的联合检验

ABSTRACT We introduce an overidentification test of two alternative assumptions to identify the average treatment effect on the treated in a two‐period panel data setting: unconfoundedness and common trends. Under unconfoundedness, treatment assignment and post‐treatment outcomes are independent, conditional on control variables and pre‐treatment outcomes, which motivates including the pre‐treatment outcomes in the set of controls. Under common trends, the trend and the…

Difference-in-Differences Estimators of Intertemporal Treatment Effects

Abstract We study treatment-effect estimation using panel data. The treatment may be nonbinary, nonabsorbing, and the outcome may be affected by treatment lags. We make a parallel-trends assumption and propose event-study estimators of the effect of being exposed to a weakly higher treatment dose for ℓ periods. We also propose normalized estimators that estimate a weighted average of the effects of the current treatment and its lags. We also analyze commonly used two-way…

What’s My Employee Worth? The Effects of Salary Benchmarking

Abstract Firms are allowed to use aggregate data on market salaries to set pay, a practice known as salary benchmarking. Using national payroll data, we study firms that gain access to a tool that reveals market benchmarks for each job title. Using a difference-in-differences design, we find that the benchmark information reduces salary dispersion by 25%. Thus, salary dispersion must stem partly from aggregate uncertainty about the salaries offered by other firms. Our model…

Automatic debiased machine learning for covariate shifts

协变量分布迁移下的自动去偏机器学习

Summary We present machine learning estimators for causal and predictive parameters under covariate shift, where covariate distributions differ between training and target populations. One such parameter is the average effect of a policy that alters the covariate distribution, such as a treatment that modifies surrogate covariates used to predict long-term outcomes. Another example is the average treatment effect for a population with a shifted covariate distribution. We…

Financial Aid and Upward Mobility: Evidence from Colombia’s Ser Pilo Paga

We study the impact of financial aid on upward mobility. We estimate the causal impacts of a Colombian policy targeting high-achieving, low-socioeconomic-status students on later-life educational and labor market outcomes. Using regression discontinuity design, difference-in-differences, and population-wide administrative microdata, we find that the policy boosted attendance and completion at high-value-added colleges, particularly in STEM fields. Improved college quality…

Inflation, War Bonds, and Voter Backlash in the 1950s

Abstract We study the role of war bonds and inflation in post-WWII federal elections. After WWII, major bouts of inflation in 1946-48 and 1950-51 depressed the real returns of the bonds sold to households during the war. In a difference-in-differences framework, we find that counties with higher war bond purchases shifted their votes towards the Republican Party in postwar elections. To address the endogeneity of war bond purchases, we use an instrumental variables design,…

Job Transitions and Employee Earnings after Acquisitions: Linking Corporate and Worker Outcomes

Abstract This paper connects changes in employer characteristics through job transitions to employee earnings following mergers and acquisitions. Using firm balance sheet data linked to individual earnings data in Canada and a matched difference-in-differences design, we find that earnings of workers at target firms decrease after M&As relative to control workers, largely driven by those who move to other firms. Workers leaving targets move to larger and more profitable…

The Employment Consequences of Anti-Dumping Tariffs: Lessons from Brazil

Abstract How do import tariffs affect employment? We develop an empirical strategy to identify the effects of tariffs using a difference-in-differences strategy, comparing antidumping (AD) investigations resulting in AD tariffs to those not resulting in AD tariffs. We find that an AD tariff decreases imports and increases employment in the protected sector. Moreover, employment in downstream firms decreases, while upstream firms are unaffected because the protected sector…

Continuous difference-in-differences with double/debiased machine learning

SUMMARY This paper extends difference-in-differences (DiD) to settings with continuous treatments. Specifically, the average treatment effect on the treated (ATT) at any level of treatment intensity is identified under a conditional parallel trends assumption. Estimating the ATT in this framework requires first estimating infinite-dimensional nuisance parameters, particularly the conditional density of the continuous treatment, which can introduce substantial bias. To…

Factorial Difference-in-Differences

析因双重差分

We formulate factorial difference-in-differences (FDID), a research design that extends canonical difference-in-differences (DID) to settings in which an event affects all units. In many panel data applications, researchers exploit cross-sectional variation in a baseline factor alongside temporal variation in the event, but the corresponding estimand is often implicit and the justification for applying the DID estimator remains unclear. We frame FDID as a factorial design…

Doubly Robust Uniform Confidence Bands for Group-Time Conditional Average Treatment Effects in Difference-in-Differences

双重稳健的交错双重差分组别—时期条件平均处理效应一致置信带

We consider a panel data analysis to examine the heterogeneity in treatment effects with respect to groups, periods, and a pre-treatment covariate of interest in the staggered difference-in-differences setting of Callaway and Sant’Anna. Under standard identification conditions, a doubly robust estimand conditional on the covariate identifies the group-time conditional average treatment effect given the covariate. Focusing on the case of a continuous covariate, we propose a…

Effect Aliasing in Observational Studies

观察性研究中的效应混杂

In experimental design, aliasing of effects occurs in fractional factorial experiments, where certain low order factorial effects are indistinguishable from certain high order interactions: low order contrast weights may be orthogonal to one another, while their higher order interactions are aliased and not identified. In observational studies, aliasing occurs when certain combinations of covariates—for example, time period and various eligibility criteria for…

Difference-in-Differences with compositional changes

存在样本构成变化的双重差分

This paper studies Difference-in-Differences (DiD) setups with repeated cross-sectional data and potential compositional changes across time periods. We begin our analysis by deriving the efficient influence function and the semiparametric efficiency bound for the average treatment effect on the treated (ATT). We introduce nonparametric estimators that attain the semiparametric efficiency bound under mild rate conditions on the estimators of the nuisance functions,…

Spatial Economics for Granular Settings

细粒度情境中的空间经济学

We examine the application of quantitative spatial models to the growing body of fine spatial data used to study local economic outcomes. In granular settings in which people choose from a large set of potential residence‐workplace pairs, observed outcomes in part reflect idiosyncratic choices. Using analytical examples, Monte Carlo simulations, and event studies of neighborhood employment booms, we demonstrate that calibration procedures that equate observed shares and…
