Factor‐Based Quantile Forecasting With Textual Data

利用文本数据的因子分位数预测

ABSTRACT Words matter for predicting tail risks. We propose an attention mechanism embedded in a quantile factor model, yielding information that is quantile‐specific, target‐specific, and horizon‐specific. We establish new asymptotic results and show empirically that targeted textual data improve quantile forecasts of exchange‐rate returns and industrial production growth relative to strong benchmarks and other conditional‐quantile models. Bigrams and trigrams drive these…

Equity‐premium prediction: Attention is all you need

股权溢价预测:关注关键信息

Summary Predictions of stock returns are greatly improved relative to low‐dimensional forecasting regressions when the forecasts are based on the estimated factor of large data sets, also known as the diffusion index (DI) model. However, when applied to text data, DI models do not perform well. This paper shows that by simply using text data in a DI model does not improve equity‐premium forecasts over the naive historical‐average model, but substantial gains are obtained…

Out-of-Sample Return Predictability: A Quantile Combination Approach

样本外收益可预测性:分位数组合方法

This paper develops a novel forecasting method that minimizes the effects of weak predictors and estimation errors on the accuracy of equity premium forecasts. The proposed method is based on an averaging scheme applied to quantiles conditional on predictors selected by LASSO. The resulting forecasts outperform the historical average, and other existing models, by statistically and economically meaningful margins. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

CONSTRUCTING OPTIMAL DENSITY FORECASTS FROM POINT FORECAST COMBINATIONS

SUMMARY Decision makers often observe point forecasts of the same variable computed, for instance, by commercial banks, IMF and the World Bank, but the econometric models used by such institutions are frequently unknown. This paper shows how to use the information available on point forecasts to compute optimal density forecasts. Our idea builds upon the combination of point forecasts under general loss functions and unknown forecast error distributions. We use real‐time…

Estimation of Censored Quantile Regression for Panel Data With Fixed Effects

含固定效应的面板删失分位数回归估计

This article investigates estimation of censored quantile regression (QR) models with fixed effects. Standard available methods are not appropriate for estimation of a censored QR model with a large number of parameters or with covariates correlated with unobserved individual heterogeneity. Motivated by these limitations, the article proposes estimators that are obtained by applying fixed effects QR to subsets of observations selected either parametrically or…

Evaluating Value-at-Risk Models via Quantile Regression

通过分位数回归评估风险价值模型

This article is concerned with evaluating Value-at-Risk estimates. It is well known that using only binary variables, such as whether or not there was an exception, sacrifices too much information. However, most of the specification tests (also called backtests) available in the literature, such as Christoffersen (1998) and Engle and Manganelli (2004) are based on such variables. In this article we propose a new backtest that does not rely solely on binary variables. It is…

A panel data approach to economic forecasting: The bias-corrected average forecast

经济预测的面板数据方法:偏差校正平均预测

In this paper, we propose a novel approach to econometric forecasting of stationary and ergodic time series within a panel-data framework. Our key element is to employ the (feasible) bias-corrected average forecast. Using panel-data sequential asymptotics we show that it is potentially superior to other techniques in several contexts. In particular, it is asymptotically equivalent to the conditional expectation, i.e., has an optimal limiting mean-squared error. We also…
