A data-adaptive method for estimating density level sets under shape conditions

形状约束下密度水平集估计的数据自适应方法

Given a random sample of points from some unknown density, we propose a method for estimating density level sets, for a positive threshold t, under the r-convexity assumption. This shape condition generalizes the convexity property and allows to consider level sets with more than one connected component. The main problem in practice is that r is an unknown geometric characteristic of the set related to its curvature, which may depend on t. A stochastic algorithm is proposed…

Minimax Estimation of the Volume of a Set Under the Rolling Ball Condition

滚动球条件下集合体积的极小极大估计

We consider the problem of estimating the volume of a compact domain in a Euclidean space based on a uniform sample from the domain. We assume that the domain has a boundary with positive reach. We propose a data-splitting approach to correct the bias of the plug-in estimator based on the sample α-convex hull. We show that this simple estimator achieves a minimax lower bound that we derive. Some numerical experiments corroborate our theoretical findings. Supplementary…

A nonparametric approach to the estimation of lengths and surface areas

长度与表面积估计的非参数方法

The Minkowski content L0(G) of a body G⊂ℝd represents the boundary length (for d=2) or the surface area (for d=3) of G. A method for estimating L0(G) is proposed. It relies on a nonparametric estimator based on the information provided by a random sample (taken on a rectangle containing G) in which we are able to identify whether every point is inside or outside G. Some theoretical properties concerning strong consistency, L1-error and convergence rates are obtained. A…
