Wavelet Based Time Series Models with Time-Varying Thresholds

This paper develops a threshold model with a time-varying threshold, represented using a wavelet series expansion. The model adequately captures irregular and abrupt variations, as well as smooth changes in the threshold parameter, allowing greater flexibility than Fourier-based approaches. Simulation experiments and real-data applications are used to evaluate the model's performance.

Multivariate reconciliation for hierarchical time series

Some time series can be hierarchically organized into levels based on certain characteristics, such as geography or other attributes of interest. These series are referred to as hierarchical time series. Typically, forecasts are generated at all levels to ensure coherence, meaning that the forecasts should satisfy the same aggregation constraints as the observed data. Various approaches have been proposed to guarantee this coherence by using a set of base forecasts. The…

The Harmonic Synthetic Control Method

Synthetic control methods can produce misleading counterfactual predictions when outcome series contain unit-specific stochastic trends, a common feature of nonstationary macroeconomic data. Existing remedies, such as pre-filtering or differencing, reduce spurious matching but may discard shared nonstationary variation that helps estimate donor weights. We propose Harmonic Synthetic Control (HSC), which replaces this binary choice with a soft allocation mechanism. HSC…

Changepoint Detection in Categorical Time Series with Application to Daily Total Cloud Cover in Canada

Changepoints are essential for homogenizing categorical time series and analyzing their trends and variations. The original total cloud cover in Canada was recorded hourly in tenths (or eighths), exhibiting inherent seasonality and serial correlation. Lu and Wang (2012) introduced an extended cumulative logit model to detect shifts in the annual frequencies of cloud cover conditions. While annual aggregation mitigates seasonality and serial correlation, it shortens the time…

Causal Discovery in Structural VAR Models Under Equal Noise Variance

Causal discovery from multivariate time series is challenging when causal effects may occur both across time and within the same sampling interval. This issue is especially important in applications such as neuroscience, where the sampling rate may be coarse relative to the underlying dynamics and contemporaneous effects need not form an acyclic graph. We study causal discovery in linear Gaussian structural VAR models under an equal noise variance assumption, meaning that…

Trend and seasonality estimation for point-process time series

This article introduces estimators of trend and seasonality for time series of point processes. We assume the point processes follow a temporal or spatial doubly-stochastic Poisson model with log-Gaussian intensity functions. The proposed estimators are computationally simple M-estimators. Their asymptotic distribution is derived, and their finite-sample performance is studied by simulation. As an example of real-data application, we study the patterns of bike demand in the…

Testing for Serial Independence via Auto Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion

We develop a Hilbert--Schmidt independence criterion (HSIC)-based framework for testing serial independence in strictly stationary time series. The proposed auto Hilbert--Schmidt independence criterion (AutoHSIC) measures dependence between an observation and its lagged counterpart, providing a kernel-based approach to detecting nonlinear serial dependence. The empirical AutoHSIC statistic is a lagged U-statistic constructed from overlapping observations, and hence inherits…

Long Memory in Intrinsically Dynamic Factor Models

We study the generalized dynamic factor model in a long-memory setting. Unlike most recent work, which assumes a finite-dimensional factor space and short memory, our framework allows the factor space to be infinite-dimensional and the common components to exhibit long memory. We employ the two-sided estimation method of Forni, Hallin, Lippi and Reichlin (2000, Review of Economics and Statistics) to recover the common component. The long memory structure of the common…

Bayesian State-Space Modeling and Model-Based Counterfactual Analysis of Dynamic Income Distributions from Grouped Data

Grouped income data contain only limited information about the evolution of income distributions over time. This paper develops a Bayesian state-space model for the generalized beta distribution of the second kind (GB2) to estimate dynamic income distributions using repeated grouped income data. By borrowing information across adjacent periods through the latent GB2 parameters, the proposed framework improves estimation precision relative to independent cross-sectional…

Fixed-order PCA: Theory for Overestimated Factor Models

We develop asymptotic theory for principal component analysis (PCA) of a high-dimensional factor model in which the working dimension $R$ is fixed and only required to satisfy $R \ge r$, where $r$ is the true number of factors. Building on anisotropic local laws from random matrix theory, we show that the ``extra'' empirical eigencomponents beyond the $r$-th are asymptotically noise-governed, incoherent, and nearly orthogonal to the factor loadings. We introduce two…

Quasi-Bayesian Local Projections: Simultaneous Inference and Extension to the Instrumental Variable Method

Local projections (LPs) are widely used for impulse response analysis, but Bayesian methods face challenges due to the absence of a likelihood function. Existing approaches rely on pseudo-likelihoods, which often result in poorly calibrated posteriors. We propose a quasi-Bayesian method based on the Laplace-type estimator, where a quasi-likelihood is constructed using a generalized method of moments criterion. This approach avoids strict distributional assumptions, ensures…

Sharpening Identification in Large Structural VARs Using Narrative Restrictions

We propose a high-dimensional structural vector autoregression framework with a factor structure in the error terms that accommodates a large number of linear inequality restrictions on both impact impulse responses and structural shocks. Our framework extends recent advances in large sign-restricted VARs by allowing narrative restrictions to be imposed directly through constraints on structural shocks via prior distributions, thereby sharpening identification and enhancing…

Inference in Tightly Identified and Large-Scale Sign-Restricted SVARs

We propose a new approach to inference in tightly identified and large-scale structural vector autoregressions based on a reparameterization that enables imposing identifying inequality restrictions through continuously differentiable mappings. Permitted inequality restrictions include shape and ranking restrictions as well as bounds on economically relevant elasticities, and the approach is also able to accommodate zero restrictions in a straightforward manner. We implement…

Online Change Point Detection for Multivariate Inhomogeneous Poisson Processes Time Series

We study online change point detection for multivariate inhomogeneous Poisson point process time series. This setting arises commonly in applications such as earthquake seismology, climate monitoring, and epidemic surveillance, yet remains underexplored in the machine learning and statistics literature. We propose a method that uses low-rank matrices to represent the multivariate Poisson intensity functions, resulting in an adaptive nonparametric detection procedure. Our…

On the Identification of Diagnostic Expectations: Econometric Insights from DSGE Models

This paper shows that diagnostic expectations (DE) and rational expectations (RE) are not observationally equivalent in dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models. Using the frequency-domain framework of Qu and Tkachenko (2012, 2017), I show that no RE parameterization yields the DE-implied autocovariance structure of the macroeconomic observables considered in either small- or medium-scale DSGE models, even after structural frictions and shock processes are…

Weight-calibrated estimation for factor models of high-dimensional time series

The factor modeling for high-dimensional time series is powerful in discovering latent common components for dimension reduction and information extraction. Most available estimation methods can be divided into two categories: the covariance-based under asymptotically-identifiable assumption and the autocovariance-based with white idiosyncratic noise. This paper follows the autocovariance-based framework and develops a novel weight-calibrated method to improve the estimation…
