Multivariate GARCH and portfolio variance prediction: A forecast reconciliation perspective

多元 GARCH 与投资组合方差预测:预测协调视角

We assess the advantage of combining univariate and multivariate portfolio risk forecasts with the aid of forecast reconciliation techniques. In our analyzes, we assume knowledge of portfolio weights, a standard for portfolio risk management applications. With an extensive simulation experiment, we show that, if the true covariance is known, forecast reconciliation improves over a standard multivariate approach, in particular when the adopted multivariate model is…

A Bayes-Factor-Guided Approach to Post-Double Selection with Bootstrapped Multiple Imputation

自助法多重插补下由贝叶斯因子引导的双重选择后方法

When variable selection methods are applied to bootstrapped and multiply imputed datasets, the set of selected variables typically varies across iterations. Aggregating results via the union rule can lead to overly dense models. We propose a sequential evidence aggregation procedure that models detection outcomes across perturbation iterations as Bernoulli trials and accumulates evidence for variable relevance through a likelihood-ratio process admitting an approximate…

Sensitivity analysis of the perturbed utility stochastic traffic equilibrium

扰动效用随机交通均衡的敏感性分析

This paper develops a sensitivity analysis framework for the perturbed utility route choice (PURC) model and the accompanying stochastic traffic equilibrium model. We derive analytical sensitivity expressions for the Jacobian of the individual optimal PURC flow and equilibrium link flows with respect to link cost parameters under general assumptions. This allows us to determine the marginal change in link flows following a marginal change in link costs across the network. We…

Jackknife Inference for Fixed Effects Models

固定效应模型的刀切法推断

This paper develops a general method of inference for fixed effects models which is (i) automatic, (ii) computationally inexpensive, (iii) tuning parameter-free, and (iv) highly model agnostic. Specifically, we show how to combine a collection of subsample estimators into a jackknife $t$-statistic, from which hypothesis tests, confidence intervals, and $p$-values are readily obtained.

Repeated Matching Games: An Empirical Framework

重复匹配博弈的实证框架

We introduce a model of dynamic matching with transferable utility, extending the static model of Shapley and Shubik (1971). Forward-looking agents have individual states that evolve with current matches. Each period, a matching market with market-clearing prices takes place. We prove the existence of an equilibrium with time-varying distributions of agent types and show it is the solution to a social planner's problem. We also prove that a stationary equilibrium exists. We…

balnet: Pathwise Estimation of Covariate Balancing Propensity Scores

balnet:协变量平衡倾向得分的路径估计

We present balnet, an R package for scalable pathwise estimation of covariate balancing propensity scores via logistic covariate balancing loss functions. Regularization paths are computed with Yang and Hastie (2024)'s generic elastic net solver, supporting convex losses with non-smooth penalties, as well as group penalties and feature-specific penalty factors. For lasso penalization, balnet computes a regularization path of balancing weights from the largest observed…

Quantifying how AI Panels improve precision

量化多人工智能评审组如何提高筛选精确率

AI in applications like screening job applicants had become widespread, and may contribute to unemployment especially among the young. Biases in the AIs may become baked into the job selection process, but even in their absence, reliance on a single AI is problematic. In this paper we derive a simple formula to estimate, or at least place an upper bound on, the precision of such approaches for data resembling realistic CVs: $P(q) \approx \frac{ρn^b + q(1-ρ)}{1 + (n^b - 1)ρ}$…

Causal Concept Graphs in LLM Latent Space for Stepwise Reasoning

用于逐步推理的大语言模型潜在空间因果概念图

Sparse autoencoders can localize where concepts live in language models, but not how they interact during multi-step reasoning. We propose Causal Concept Graphs (CCG): a directed acyclic graph over sparse, interpretable latent features, where edges capture learned causal dependencies between concepts. We combine task-conditioned sparse autoencoders for concept discovery with DAGMA-style differentiable structure learning for graph recovery and introduce the Causal Fidelity…

Counterfactual Density Effects and the German East--West Income Gap

反事实密度效应与德国东西部收入差距

We propose a novel framework for conducting causal inference based on counterfactual densities. While the current paradigm of causal inference is mostly focused on estimating average treatment effects (ATEs), which restricts the analysis to the first moment of the outcome variable, our density-based approach is able to detect causal effects based on general distributional characteristics. Following the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition approach, we consider two types of…

Online Distributional Regression

在线分布回归

Large-scale streaming data are common in modern machine learning applications and have led to the development of online learning algorithms. Many fields, such as supply chain management, weather and meteorology, energy markets, and finance, have pivoted toward probabilistic forecasting. This results in the need not only for accurate learning of the expected value but also for learning the conditional heteroskedasticity and conditional moments. Against this backdrop, we…

Fitting Dynamically Misspecified Models: An Optimal Transportation Approach

动态误设模型的拟合:最优传输方法

This paper considers filtering, parameter estimation, and testing for potentially dynamically misspecified state-space models. When dynamics are misspecified, filtered values of state variables often do not satisfy model restrictions, making them hard to interpret, and parameter estimates may fail to characterize the dynamics of filtered variables. To address this, a sequential optimal transportation approach is used to generate a model-consistent sample by mapping…

Causal Variance Decompositions for Measuring Health Inequalities

衡量健康不平等的因果方差分解

Recent causal inference literature has introduced causal effect decompositions to quantify sources of observed inequalities or disparities in outcomes, but these approaches are typically limited to pairwise comparisons. In healthcare delivery settings, both the exposure of interest-hospital or healthcare unit-and sociodemographic group membership may be polytomous, making pairwise contrasts inadequate. We therefore take the observed variance in care delivery outcomes as the…

Partial Identification of Policy-Relevant Treatment Effects with Instrumental Variables via Optimal Transport

通过最优传输部分识别工具变量下的政策相关处理效应

Policy-Relevant Treatment Effects (PRTEs) are generally not point-identified under standard Instrumental Variable (IV) assumptions when the instrument generates limited support in treatment propensity. We show that PRTE partial identification in the generalized Roy model can instead be formulated as a Constrained Conditional Optimal Transport (CCOT) problem over the joint conditional law of the potential outcome and the latent resistance. The resulting multidimensional CCOT…

Design-based nested instrumental variable analysis

基于设计的嵌套工具变量分析

Two binary instrumental variables (IVs) are nested if individuals who comply under one binary IV also comply under the other. This situation often arises when the two IVs represent different intensities of encouragement or discouragement to take the treatment, with one stronger than the other. In a nested IV structure, treatment effects can be identified for two latent subgroups: always-compliers and switchers. Always-compliers are individuals who comply even under the…

Estimation Strategies for Causal Decomposition Analysis with Allowability Specifications

考虑可允许性设定的因果分解分析估计策略

Causal decomposition analysis (CDA) is an approach for modeling the impact of hypothetical interventions to reduce disparities. It is useful for identifying foci that future interventions, including multilevel and multimodal interventions, could focus on to reduce disparities. Based within the potential outcomes framework, CDA has a causal interpretation when the identifying assumptions are met. CDA also allows an analyst to consider which covariates are allowable (i.e.,…

Design-based finite-sample analysis for regression adjustment

回归调整的设计型有限样本分析

In randomized experiments, regression adjustment can improve the precision of average treatment effect (ATE) estimation using covariates without requiring a correctly specified outcome model. Although well studied in low-dimensional settings, its behavior in high-dimensional regimes, where the number of covariates $p$ may exceed the number of observations $n$, remains underexplored. Moreover, existing analyses are largely asymptotic, providing limited guidance for…

Causal Meta-Analysis: Rethinking the Foundations of Evidence-Based Medicine

因果元分析:重新审视循证医学的基础

Meta-analysis, by synthesizing effect estimates from multiple studies conducted in diverse settings, stands at the top of the evidence hierarchy in clinical research. Yet, conventional approaches based on fixed- or random-effects models lack a causal framework, which may limit their interpretability and utility for public policy. Incorporating causal inference reframes meta-analysis as the estimation of well-defined causal effects on clearly specified populations, enabling a…

Integrating behavioral experimental findings into dynamical models to inform social change interventions

将行为实验发现融入动态模型以设计社会变革干预

Addressing global challenges often involves stimulating the large-scale adoption of new products or behaviors. Research traditions that focus on individual decision making suggest that achieving this objective requires identifying the drivers of individual discrete adoption choices. On the other hand, computational approaches rooted in complexity science focus on maximizing the propagation of a given product or behavior throughout social networks of interconnected adopters.…

Forecasting with Feedback

存在政策反馈时的预测

Systematically biased forecasts are typically interpreted as evidence of forecasters' irrationality and/or asymmetric loss. In this paper we propose an alternative explanation: when forecasts inform policy decisions, and the resulting actions affect the realisation of the forecast target itself, forecasts may be optimally biased even under quadratic loss. The result arises in environments in which the forecaster is uncertain about the policymaker's reaction to the forecast,…

Factor multivariate stochastic volatility models of high dimension

高维因子多元随机波动率模型

Building upon factor decomposition to overcome the curse of dimensionality inherent in multivariate volatility processes, we develop a factor model-based multivariate stochastic volatility (fMSV) framework. We propose a two-stage estimation procedure for the fMSV model: in the first stage, estimators of the factor model are obtained, and in the second stage, the MSV component is estimated using the estimated common factor variables. We derive the asymptotic properties of the…

Identification and estimation of dynamic random coefficient models

动态随机系数模型的识别与估计

I study linear panel data models with predetermined regressors (such as lagged dependent variables) where coefficients are individual-specific, allowing for heterogeneity in the effects of the regressors on the dependent variable. I show that the model is not point-identified in a short panel context but rather partially identified, and I characterize the identified sets for the mean, variance, and CDF of the coefficient distribution. This characterization is general,…

Complex trend inference for high-dimensional piecewise locally stationary time series

高维分段局部平稳时间序列的复杂趋势推断

This paper studies high-dimensional trend inference for piecewise smooth signals under nonstationary noise and asynchronous structural breaks by first detecting asynchronous changes without assuming stationarity and then further exploiting latent group structures to estimate trend functions. In the first step, we propose AJDN (Asynchronous Jump Detection under Nonstationary Noise), a multiscale framework for the identification and localization of jumps in high-dimensional…

Tail-robust estimation of factor-adjusted vector autoregressive models for high-dimensional time series

高维时间序列中因子调整向量自回归模型的厚尾稳健估计

We study the problem of modelling high-dimensional, heavy-tailed time series data via a factor-adjusted vector autoregressive (VAR) model, which simultaneously accounts for pervasive co-movements of the variables by a handful of factors, as well as their remaining interconnectedness using a sparse VAR model. To handle heavy tails, we propose an element-wise data truncation step followed by a two-stage estimation procedure for estimating the latent factors and the VAR…

Post-treatment problems: What can we say about the effect of a treatment among sub-groups who (would) respond in some way?

处理后分组问题:如何分析会对处理作出特定反应者的效应

Investigators are often interested in how a treatment affects an outcome for units responding to treatment in a certain way. We may wish to know the effect among units that, for example, meaningfully implemented an intervention, passed an attention check, or demonstrated some important mechanistic response. Simply conditioning on the observed value of the post-treatment variable introduces problematic biases. Further, the identification assumptions required of several…
