Identification and Inference in proxy-SVARs with non-Gaussian shocks

Two frequent approaches for identifying structural VARs are external instruments, which carry economic content but are often weak, and non-Gaussianity of the shocks, which provides statistical identification but carries no economic meaning. We combine the two strategies in a single generalized method of moments framework. This hybrid approach point-identifies the target shocks while also identifying the non-target shocks up to sign and ordering. Under suitable rank…

Granular Instrumental Variables in Large Panels: Identification and Inference Across Strong, Nearly Weak, and Weak GIV

I develop asymptotic theory for Granular Instrumental Variables (GIV) in large panels with both $N$ and $T$ growing. The granular instrument is constructed from individual shocks that must be estimated from the panel. I show that this estimation has a first-order effect on the asymptotic variance of the GIV estimator. Existing methods do not account for this effect, leading to incorrect standard errors and invalid inference. I derive corrected standard errors that deliver…

Difference-in-Differences Meets Synthetic Control: Doubly Robust Identification and Estimation

Difference-in-Differences (DiD) and Synthetic Control (SC) are widely used methods for causal inference in panel data, each with distinct strengths and limitations. We propose a novel method for short-panel causal inference that integrates the advantages of both approaches. Our method delivers a doubly robust identification strategy for the average treatment effect on the treated (ATT) under either of two non-nested assumptions: parallel trends or a group-level SC condition.…

Identification and Inference with Machine-Learned Instruments

Instrumental-variables estimation increasingly pools many or high-dimensional instruments into a single machine-learned first stage, with rich controls partialled out. The resulting estimand, the partialled-out IV coefficient built from any signal of the instruments, is a signal-weighted average of the heterogeneous effects, which gives an opaque first stage a precise structural meaning. The average is convex whenever a covariance-monotonicity condition holds, and we provide…

Separating Time-Varying Network Composition from Predictive Dependence under Noisy Network Measurement

A common question about networked time series is whether outcomes changed because shocks transmit more strongly or because the pattern of connections changed. Standard practice inserts a recorded network into an outcome regression and reads movements of the fitted coefficient as changes in transmission strength. When the network is latent, time varying, and measured with error, this reading fails: changes in strength and changes in composition can produce the same outcome…

Estimation and exclusion restrictions in clustered linear models

We study linear regression models with clustered data, high-dimensional controls, and intricate exclusion restrictions. We propose a correctly centered internal instrument IV estimator that accommodates a broad class of exclusion restrictions and allows within-cluster dependence. The estimator admits a simple leave-out interpretation and is computationally tractable. We derive a central limit theorem for the associated quadratic form and propose a robust variance estimator.…

Identification and Information after Nuisance Projection

Empirical work often removes fixed effects, latent factors, or high-dimensional controls before estimating structural relationships. These transformations reduce confounding but may also remove identifying variation. We study linear panel IV after one equation-compatible nuisance projection under two-way dependence. The projected Jacobian determines which structural directions remain visible; the projected-score law determines their precision; and, on Gaussian fixed-rank…

Dynamic Local Average Treatment Effects in Time Series

This paper discusses identification, estimation, and inference on dynamic local average treatment effects (LATEs) in instrumental variables (IVs) settings. First, we show that compliers--observations whose treatment status is affected by the instrument--can be identified individually in time series data using smoothness assumptions and local comparisons of treatment assignments. Second, we show that this result enables not only better interpretability of IV estimates but…

Heterogeneous Treatment Effect Estimation under Noncompliance in the Illinois Workplace Wellness Study with Bayesian Tree Ensembles

Estimating varying treatment effects in randomized trials with noncompliance is inherently challenging since variation comes from two separate sources: variation in the impact itself and variation in the compliance rate. In this setting, existing flexible machine learning methods are sensitive to the weak instruments problem and can yield unstable estimates of heterogeneity when run repeatedly with different initialization or random seeds. Our main methodological…

Weak instrumental variables due to ignored nonlinearities in panel data: A Super Learner Control Function estimator

A triangular structural panel data model with additive separable individual-specific effects is used to model the causal effect of a covariate on an outcome variable when there are unobservable confounders with some of them time-invariant. In this setup, a linear specification for the reduced-form equation might be problematic when the conditional mean of the endogenous covariate and the instrumental variables is nonlinear in the population. The reason is that ignoring the…

Multivariable Mendelian randomization with weak instruments: a comparison of Bayesian and frequentist methods

Weak instruments are a well known limitation for valid causal inference in Mendelian randomization studies. In the single exposure setting, weak instrument bias can be mitigated by selecting genetic instruments which are strongly associated with the exposure according to p-value and/or F-statistic thresholds. However, in the multi-exposure setting, genetic instruments may be strongly associated with an exposure but weakly associated with it conditional on all other exposures…

Two-Sample IV: Efficient Two-Step Estimation and Tests for Overidentification and Weak-Instruments

Two-sample IV is a popular estimation method when the outcome and treatment variables are available in different samples, whereas instruments are available in both samples. The standard estimator is two-sample two-stage least squares estimator, which is efficient under homoskedasticity and homogeneity of the samples. We develop a robust two-step procedure for efficient estimation under general heteroskedasticity and heterogeneity of the samples, and propose a related…

Inference on the TSLS Estimand with Weak Instruments and Treatment Effect Heterogeneity

Traditional inference on the coefficient in an instrumental variables regression does not retain size when the instrument set is weak. With constant treatment effects or one instrument, the Anderson and Rubin (1949) AR test, the Klieibergen (2002)-Moreira (2003) LM test, and the Moreira CLR test provide robust alternatives which retain validity. Under treatment effect heterogeneity, no valid inference procedure exists in the overidentified setting. This paper develops the…

A Robust Framework for Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization under Population Heterogeneity

Mendelian randomization is a powerful tool for causal inference in observational studies. The two-sample summary-data design, which estimates genetic associations with exposures and outcomes in separate cohorts, is the most widely used Mendelian randomization approach in large-scale genomic studies. However, this approach relies on a strong assumption of population homogeneity across the two samples. In practice, available samples often differ in ancestry, demographics,…

Jackknife Instrumental Variable Inference

Jackknife

This paper introduces a class of jackknife-based test statistics for linear regression models with endogeneity and heteroskedasticity in the presence of many potentially weak instrumental variables. The tests may be used when considering hypotheses on the full parameter vector or hypotheses defined as linear restrictions. We show that in the limit and under the null the proposed statistics are distributed as a combination of chi squares but by modifying the objective…

Multi-Task Learning for High-Dimensional Regression with Many Weak Instruments

Many weak instrumental variables (IVs) are routinely used in the health and social sciences to improve identification and inference of the treatment effect of interest, along with a broad collection of data on potential confounding factors in the hope that the IV assumptions hold within each data stratum. We propose a new debiased continuous-updating generalized method of moments estimator with multi-task learning of the IV propensity scores to simultaneously address the…

Confidence Sets under Weak Identification: Theory and Practice

We develop new methods for constructing confidence sets and intervals in linear instrumental variables (IV) models based on tests that remain valid under weak identification and under heteroskedastic, autocorrelated, or clustered errors. In practice, researchers typically recover such sets by grid search, a procedure that can miss parts of the confidence region, truncate unbounded sets, and deliver misleading inference. We replace grid inversion with exact and…

An Improved Inference for IV Regressions

Empirical instrumental variables (IV) studies often report separate results based on low-dimensional instruments and many base instruments. This paper proposes a combination test that integrates these commonly reported statistics. The test linearly combines a cluster-robust Wald statistic based on low-dimensional IVs with leave-one-cluster-out Lagrangian Multiplier (LM) and Anderson-Rubin (AR) statistics constructed from many IVs. We establish joint asymptotic normality and…

Double Machine Learning for Static Panel Data with Instrumental Variables: New Method and Applications

Panel data methods are widely used in empirical analysis to address unobserved heterogeneity, but causal inference remains challenging when treatments are endogenous and confounding variables high-dimensional and potentially nonlinear. Standard instrumental variables (IV) estimators, such as two-stage least squares (2SLS), become unreliable when instrument validity requires flexibly conditioning on many covariates with potentially non-linear effects. This paper develops a…

Weak-instrument-robust subvector inference in instrumental variables regression: A subvector Lagrange multiplier test and properties of subvector Anderson-Rubin confidence sets

We propose a weak-instrument-robust subvector Lagrange multiplier test for instrumental variables regression. We show that it is asymptotically size-correct under a technical condition or as the number of instruments grows to infinity. This is the first weak-instrument-robust subvector test for instrumental variables regression to recover the degrees of freedom of the commonly used non-weak-instrument-robust Wald test. Additionally, we provide a closed-form solution for…

Operationalizing Longitudinal Causal Discovery Under Real-World Workflow Constraints

Causal discovery has achieved substantial theoretical progress, yet its deployment in large-scale longitudinal systems remains limited. A key obstacle is that operational data are generated under institutional workflows whose induced partial orders are rarely formalized, enlarging the admissible graph space in ways inconsistent with the recording process. We characterize a workflow-induced constraint class for longitudinal causal discovery that restricts the admissible…

Distributional Instruments: Identification and Estimation with Quantile Least Squares

We study instrumental-variable designs where policy reforms strongly shift the distribution of an endogenous variable but only weakly move its mean. We formalize this by introducing distributional relevance: instruments may be purely distributional. Within a triangular model, distributional relevance suffices for nonparametric identification of average structural effects via a control function. We then propose Quantile Least Squares (Q-LS), which aggregates conditional…

Nonparametric Instrumental Variable Inference with Many Weak Instruments

We study inference on linear functionals in the nonparametric instrumental variable (NPIV) problem with a discretely-valued instrument under a many-weak-instruments asymptotic regime, where the number of instrument values grows with the sample size. A key motivating example is estimating long-term causal effects in a new experiment with only short-term outcomes, using past experiments to instrument for the effect of short- on long-term outcomes. Here, the assignment to a…

Extrapolating LATE with Weak IVs

To evaluate the effectiveness of a counterfactual policy, it is often necessary to extrapolate treatment effects on compliers to broader populations. This extrapolation relies on exogenous variation in instruments, which is often weak in practice. This limited variation leads to invalid confidence intervals that are typically too short and cannot be accurately detected by classical methods. For instance, the F-test may falsely conclude that the instruments are strong.…
