Identification and Inference in proxy-SVARs with non-Gaussian shocks

Two frequent approaches for identifying structural VARs are external instruments, which carry economic content but are often weak, and non-Gaussianity of the shocks, which provides statistical identification but carries no economic meaning. We combine the two strategies in a single generalized method of moments framework. This hybrid approach point-identifies the target shocks while also identifying the non-target shocks up to sign and ordering. Under suitable rank…

Maximum score and non-smooth M-estimators with multiway dependence

Under i.i.d. sampling, the maximum score estimator of Manski (1975) converges at the cube-root rate to a non-Gaussian limit. We show that, under multiway dependence and low-level conditions, it is asymptotically normal at a parametric rate in the smallest number of clusters and, when the cluster-level variance is non-degenerate, as fast as regular estimators such as probit. The result rests on a general theory for non-smooth M-estimators, under which a modified bootstrap is…

Formalization and consistency of clone-censor-weight

克隆—删失—加权方法的形式化与一致性

Target trial emulation has become a standard framework for causal inference from observational data. Within this paradigm, the clone-censor-weight (CCW) methodology provides a practical way to deal with complex treatment and adherence definitions when treatment regimes are not distinguishable at baseline. Despite its increasing use, the statistical interpretation of CCW remains limited. In this work, we formalize the CCW methodology from a statistical viewpoint based on…

The Panel Information Matrix Test

面板信息矩阵检验

The Information Matrix (IM) test is a natural specification check for likelihood-based models, yet cross-sectional implementations are often badly sized, confound neglected heterogeneity with distributional misspecification, and require third derivatives. We develop the panel information matrix (PIM) test for models with fixed effects. Explicit fixed effects isolate functional-form misspecification from time-invariant unobserved heterogeneity. Although the profile maximum…

When Does Inexact Matching Ensure Balance and Inference without Adjustment?

非精确匹配何时能在无需调整的情况下保证平衡与有效推断?

One-to-one matching without replacement is a classical approach to constructing comparable treated and control samples in the design of observational studies. It pairs each treated unit with a distinct control while minimizing a covariate distance objective. With continuous covariates, the matched pairs generally remain inexact, which contributes to bias in downstream analysis. Its key theoretical properties, such as the resulting imbalance between matched pairs and when it…

Debiased inference for proximal dose-response function

We study nonparametric inference for a continuous-treatment causal dose-response curve and its first derivative under unmeasured confounding, using treatment- and outcome-inducing proxies. We establish a proximal doubly robust pseudo-outcome whose conditional mean given treatment equals the dose-response curve whenever either bridge function is correctly specified. Their (smoothed) efficient influence function representations lead to cross-fitted local-polynomial estimators…

Robust Inference for Dyadic Data with Spatially Dependent Nodes

We develop inference for complete dyadic samples with spatial dependence governed by geographic distances between nodes, covering settings beyond the scope of existing dyadic inference theory. We propose spatial variance and corrected block jackknife estimators consistent in nondegenerate and degenerate Gaussian cases. Under degeneracy, spatial subsampling consistently estimates possibly non-Gaussian limits. Combining the jackknife with subsampling yields the max…

Bootstrap Inference for Dynamic Panel Data Models with Common Correlated Effects

共同相关效应动态面板模型的自助法推断

We study recursive-design wild bootstrap inference for dynamic panel data models with unobserved common factors estimated by Common Correlated Effects. In the large N,T setting, the bootstrap reproduces the biased limiting distribution in pure autoregressive models, but fails to capture all bias and factor-estimation variance components in models with additional regressors, particularly under weak exogeneity. We trace this failure to holding regressors fixed across bootstrap…

An Averaging Alternative to Pre-Trend Testing

以模型平均替代处理前趋势检验

We study difference-in-differences (DID) estimation of average treatment effects on the treated when the researcher is uncertain about which pre-treatment periods satisfy the parallel trends assumption. Roth (2022) shows that pre-trend testing can induce bias, complementing the statistical literature on post-selection inference. We propose the model averaged difference-in-differences (MADID) estimator, a weighted average of the candidate $2\times2$ DID estimators. The…

Robust Estimation and Inference in Hybrid Controlled Trials for Binary Outcomes: A Case Study on Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

二元结果混合对照试验的稳健估计与推断:非小细胞肺癌案例

Hybrid controlled trials (HCTs), which augment randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with external controls (ECs), are increasingly receiving attention as a way to address limited power, slow accrual, and ethical concerns in clinical research. However, borrowing from ECs raises critical statistical challenges in estimation and inference, especially for binary outcomes where hidden bias is harder to detect and estimands such as risk difference, risk ratio, and odds ratio are of…

Minimax estimation of the expected conditional covariance under bounds on the covariate density

协变量密度有界条件下期望条件协方差的极小极大估计

In many scientific studies, evaluating the association between two responses requires adjusting for shared covariates. The expected conditional covariance measures this adjusted association and is used in conditional independence testing and treatment effect estimation. Researchers often estimate it using fitted conditional means, but removing the bias caused by the estimation errors of these conditional means remains a difficult task. This difficulty can increase when the…

Bootstrap Inference with a Randomly Assigned Regressor: Covariance Filtering and the Limits of Marginal Resampling

随机分配回归变量的自助法推断:协方差过滤与边际重抽样的局限

Random assignment can make ordinary least squares (OLS) inference insensitive to outcome dependence, yet iid resampling can still fail because assignment and resampling need not remove the same covariance terms. With binary treatment, the iid variance target differs from the sampling variance by exactly minus aggregate cross-unit covariance of treatment effects. Under a Gaussian first-order limit, positive covariance leads to over-rejection and negative covariance to…

Cheap subsampling bootstrap confidence intervals with applications to longitudinal causal inference

The bootstrap is widely used to construct confidence intervals but may perform poorly for some estimators. We consider semiparametric estimators that use cross-validation to estimate nuisance pa- rameters and can be computationally expensive in large datasets. We illustrate potential problems with bootstrapping with replacement when cross-validation is used and extend the cheap bootstrap confidence interval to subsampling without replacement for asymptotically linear…

Projection-based significance test for longitudinally collected functional data under a crossover design

Wearable devices for continuous electronic health monitoring often capture data at frequent intervals under a dense functional design. The focal point is the analysis of longitudinal functional data, wherein functional trajectories are observed repeatedly over time. This work is motivated by the interest in assessing the efficacy of a noninflammatory medication, meloxicam, on the daily activity levels of household cats with a pre-existing condition of osteoarthritis under a…

Inference for Standard Trial Estimands after Data-Driven Subgroup Discovery

数据驱动亚组发现后标准试验估计量的推断

Data-driven subgroup identification is increasingly used in clinical trials, yet the effect reported for a discovered subgroup is typically the standard analysis: a Cox or generalized-linear-model treatment coefficient fitted within that subgroup. Selection by an effect-driven rule --- rewarding large estimated effects subject to screening and size criteria --- inflates the reported coefficient: a winner's curse invalidating naive intervals whether or not the identifier's…

Debiased Inference for Bounding Wage Inequality with Many Controls

多控制变量下工资不平等界的去偏推断

We study estimation and inference for a partially identified parameter whose identified set depends on a first-stage nuisance parameter that must itself be estimated. Combining the criterion-function approach with the theory of Neyman-orthogonal moments that underlies double/debiased machine learning, we propose a two-step procedure: the point-identified nuisance is estimated by flexible machine-learning methods, and the set-identified target is recovered as a level set of a…

Debiased and Simultaneous Inference for Heterogeneous Factorial Effect Modifiers via Residualized Walsh-Hadamard Scores

基于残差化 Walsh–Hadamard 得分的异质析因效应修饰因子去偏与同时推断

In factorial randomized experiments with $K$ binary treatment components, we study which baseline covariates modify component main effects and interactions. We define effect-modifier cells $(j,S)$, $j\in[p]$ and $\emptyset\neq S\subseteq[K]$, through the coefficients $θ^\ast_{jS}$ of population linear projections of conditional Walsh--Hadamard contrasts $τ_{S}$ onto standardized covariates. Using baseline-robust direct scores, we develop frequentist inference for all $p(2^K-1)$…

Randomization Tests in Switchback Experiments

交替处理实验中的随机化检验

Switchback experiments assign an experimental unit, such as a market or a platform, to treatment or control over successive blocks of time. Inference can be challenging because these experiments often contain only a small number of randomized blocks, while outcomes may exhibit serial dependence, seasonality, and treatment effects that persist across periods. We develop a conditional randomization test for the null of no total treatment effect that is finite-sample valid…

Difference-in-Differences Meets Synthetic Control: Doubly Robust Identification and Estimation

双重差分与合成控制的结合:双重稳健识别和估计

Difference-in-Differences (DiD) and Synthetic Control (SC) are widely used methods for causal inference in panel data, each with distinct strengths and limitations. We propose a novel method for short-panel causal inference that integrates the advantages of both approaches. Our method delivers a doubly robust identification strategy for the average treatment effect on the treated (ATT) under either of two non-nested assumptions: parallel trends or a group-level SC condition.…

An Adversarial Approach to Identification, Computation, and Inference in Models with a Linear-in-Measures Representation

测度线性表示模型中识别、计算与推断的对抗方法

We develop a framework for identification, computation, and inference in econometric models with a linear-in-measures representation. These models express maintained restrictions as moment conditions linear in the joint probability measure of observed and latent inputs, and map that measure linearly to the distribution of outputs, even with nonlinear outcome equations. We construct an adversarial discrepancy function whose zeros characterize the identified set for structural…

Econometrics with Pre-Trained Embeddings for Unstructured Data

使用预训练嵌入处理非结构化数据的计量经济学

Unstructured data, such as images and text, are increasingly used in empirical economics. Since training machine-learning models on unstructured data is costly, economists often use off-the-shelf pre-trained deep learning models developed by computer scientists to extract embeddings, which are then used as covariates in target economic analyses. Despite the popularity of this practice, its theoretical foundations remain limited. There are two main difficulties. First,…

Bagged Martingale Posteriors: Calibrated Uncertainty Quantification for Predictive Resampling

自助集成鞅后验:预测重采样的不确定性校准

Martingale posteriors and related predictive resampling methods replace the likelihood--prior pair used within Bayesian inference with a predictive model for future observations. These methods are simple to implement and increasingly popular due to their computational efficiency, but little is known about their ability to accurately quantify uncertainty. In this work, we study the concentration and calibration properties of the martingale posterior for general functionals,…

Under rolling enrollment, these outcomes are observed only for early enrollees, while short-term surrogates are available for everyone. We compare seven estimators across eleven data-generating processes, spanning partial mediation, drift, outcome sparsity, and enrollment-time labeling, with up to $R = 2,000$ replications over more than 500 method-by-scenario cells. A unified framework for estimating direct causal effect under spatial confounding and interference, with the R package spaci

空间混杂与干扰下直接因果效应估计的统一框架及 R 包 spaci

Estimating causal effects is challenging with observational data due to the lack of exchangeability, and is further complicated with spatial data. In real-life applications such as agricultural and environmental studies, unobserved spatial factors (spatial confounding, SC) and interactions of units in nearby locations (spatial interference, SI) commonly occur jointly, yet existing parametric methods address them separately. We develop a unified framework that treats both…
