High-dimensional dynamic factor models: a selective survey and lines of future research

High-Dimensional Dynamic Factor Models are presented in detail: The main assumptions and their motivation, main results, illustrations by means of elementary examples. In particular, the role of singular ARMA models in the theory and applications of High-Dimensional Dynamic Factor Models is discussed. The emphasis of the paper is on model classes and their structure theory, rather than on estimation in the narrow sense. Our aim is not a comprehensive survey. Rather we try to…

Partial Sum Processes of Residual-Based and Wald-type Break-Point Statistics in Time Series Regression Models

We revisit classical asymptotics when testing for a structural break in linear regression models by obtaining the limit theory of residual-based and Wald-type processes. First, we establish the Brownian bridge limiting distribution of these test statistics. Second, we study the asymptotic behaviour of the partial-sum processes in nonstationary (linear) time series regression models. Although, the particular comparisons of these two different modelling environments is done…

Sequential Monte Carlo With Model Tempering

Modern macroeconometrics often relies on time series models for which it is time-consuming to evaluate the likelihood function. We demonstrate how Bayesian computations for such models can be drastically accelerated by reweighting and mutating posterior draws from an approximating model that allows for fast likelihood evaluations, into posterior draws from the model of interest, using a sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) algorithm. We apply the technique to the estimation of a…

POT-flavored estimator of Pickands dependence function

This work proposes an estimator with both Peak-Over-Threshold and Block-Maxima flavors, uses it to estimate the Pickands dependence function of bivariate time series, and illustrates how it brings down the asymptotic bias and the overall mean squared error.

Approximate Bayesian inference and forecasting in huge-dimensional multi-country VARs

Panel Vector Autoregressions (PVARs) are a popular tool for analyzing multi-country datasets. However, the number of estimated parameters can be enormous, leading to computational and statistical issues. In this paper, we develop fast Bayesian methods for estimating PVARs using integrated rotated Gaussian approximations. We exploit the fact that domestic information is often more important than international information and group the coefficients accordingly. Fast…

A Framework for the Time- and Frequency-Domain Assessment of High-Order Interactions in Brain and Physiological Networks

While the standard network description of complex systems is based on quantifying links between pairs of system units, higher-order interactions (HOIs) involving three or more units play a major role in governing the collective network behavior. This work introduces an approach to quantify pairwise and HOIs for multivariate rhythmic processes interacting across multiple time scales. We define the so-called O-information rate (OIR) as a new metric to assess HOIs for…

Detecting Structural Breaks in Foreign Exchange Markets by using the group LASSO technique

This article proposes an estimation method to detect breakpoints for linear time series models with their parameters that jump scarcely. Its basic idea owes the group LASSO (group least absolute shrinkage and selection operator). The method practically provides estimates of such time-varying parameters of the models. An example shows that our method can detect each structural breakpoint's date and magnitude.

Tests for Group-Specific Heterogeneity in High-Dimensional Factor Models

Standard high-dimensional factor models assume that the comovements in a large set of variables could be modeled using a small number of latent factors that affect all variables. In many relevant applications in economics and finance, heterogenous comovements specific to some known groups of variables naturally arise, and reflect distinct cyclical movements within those groups. This paper develops two new statistical tests that can be used to investigate whether there is…

Adaptive information-based methods for determining the co-integration rank in heteroskedastic VAR models

Standard methods, such as sequential procedures based on Johansen's (pseudo-)likelihood ratio (PLR) test, for determining the co-integration rank of a vector autoregressive (VAR) system of variables integrated of order one can be significantly affected, even asymptotically, by unconditional heteroskedasticity (non-stationary volatility) in the data. Known solutions to this problem include wild bootstrap implementations of the PLR test or the use of an information criterion,…

Statistical inference in factor analysis for diffusion processes from discrete observations

We consider statistical inference in factor analysis for ergodic and non-ergodic diffusion processes from discrete observations. Factor model based on high frequency time series data has been mainly discussed in the field of high dimensional covariance matrix estimation. In this field, the method based on principal component analysis has been mainly used. However, this method is effective only for high dimensional model. On the other hand, there is a method based on the…

Parameter estimation for the FOU(p) process with the same lambda

The FOU(p) processes can be considered as an alternative to ARMA (or ARFIMA) processes to model time series. Also, there is no substantial loss when we model a time series using FOU(p) processes with the same lambda, than using differents values of lambda. In this work we propose a new method to estimate the unique value of lambda in a FOU(p) process. Under certain conditions, we will prove consistency and asymptotic normality. We will show that this new method is more easy…

Factor-Based Imputation of Missing Values and Covariances in Panel Data of Large Dimensions

Economists are blessed with a wealth of data for analysis, but more often than not, values in some entries of the data matrix are missing. Various methods have been proposed to handle missing observations in a few variables. We exploit the factor structure in panel data of large dimensions. Our \textsc{tall-project} algorithm first estimates the factors from a \textsc{tall} block in which data for all rows are observed, and projections of variable specific length are then…

Deep Learning Macroeconomics

Limited datasets and complex nonlinear relationships are among the challenges that may emerge when applying econometrics to macroeconomic problems. This research proposes deep learning as an approach to transfer learning in the former case and to map relationships between variables in the latter case. Although macroeconomists already apply transfer learning when assuming a given a priori distribution in a Bayesian context, estimating a structural VAR with signal restriction…

Magnitude-squared coherence: A powerful tool for disentangling Doppler planet discoveries from stellar activity

If Doppler searches for earth-mass, habitable planets are to succeed, observers must be able to identify and model out stellar activity signals. Here we demonstrate how to diagnose activity signals by calculating the magnitude-squared coherence $\hat{C}^2_{xy}(f)$ between an activity indicator time series $x_t$ and the radial velocity (RV) time series $y_t$. Since planets only cause modulation in RV, not in activity indicators, a high value of $\hat{C}^2_{xy}(f)$ indicates…

Some asymptotic results for time series model selection

We consider the model selection problem for a large class of time series models, including, multivariate count processes, causal processes with exogenous covariates. A procedure based on a general penalized contrast is proposed. Some asymptotic results for weak and strong consistency are established. The non consistency issue is addressed, and a class of penalty term, that does not ensure consistency is provided. Examples of continuous valued and multivariate count…

A General Description of Growth Trends

Time series that display periodicity can be described with a Fourier expansion. In a similar vein, a recently developed formalism enables description of growth patterns with the optimal number of parameters (Elitzur et al, 2020). The method has been applied to the growth of national GDP, population and the COVID-19 pandemic; in all cases the deviations of long-term growth patterns from pure exponential required no more than two additional parameters, mostly only one. Here I…

System identification using Bayesian neural networks with nonparametric noise models

System identification is of special interest in science and engineering. This article is concerned with a system identification problem arising in stochastic dynamic systems, where the aim is to estimate the parameters of a system along with its unknown noise processes. In particular, we propose a Bayesian nonparametric approach for system identification in discrete time nonlinear random dynamical systems assuming only the order of the Markov process is known. The proposed…

Lead-lag detection and network clustering for multivariate time series with an application to the US equity market

In multivariate time series systems, it has been observed that certain groups of variables partially lead the evolution of the system, while other variables follow this evolution with a time delay; the result is a lead-lag structure amongst the time series variables. In this paper, we propose a method for the detection of lead-lag clusters of time series in multivariate systems. We demonstrate that the web of pairwise lead-lag relationships between time series can be…

Relative Contagiousness of Emerging Virus Variants: An Analysis of the Alpha, Delta, and Omicron SARS-CoV-2 Variants

We propose a simple dynamic model for estimating the relative contagiousness of two virus variants. Maximum likelihood estimation and inference is conveniently invariant to variation in the total number of cases over the sample period and can be expressed as a logistic regression. We apply the model to Danish SARS-CoV-2 variant data. We estimate the reproduction numbers of Alpha and Delta to be larger than that of the ancestral variant by a factor of 1.51 [CI 95%: 1.50,…

Generative Models for Periodicity Detection in Noisy Signals

We introduce a new periodicity detection algorithm for binary time series of event onsets, the Gaussian Mixture Periodicity Detection Algorithm (GMPDA). The algorithm approaches the periodicity detection problem to infer the parameters of a generative model. We specified two models - the Clock and Random Walk - which describe two different periodic phenomena and provide a generative framework. The algorithm achieved strong results on test cases for single and multiple…

Asymptotic properties of Bayesian inference in linear regression with a structural break

This paper studies large sample properties of a Bayesian approach to inference about slope parameters $γ$ in linear regression models with a structural break. In contrast to the conventional approach to inference about $γ$ that does not take into account the uncertainty of the unknown break location $τ$, the Bayesian approach that we consider incorporates such uncertainty. Our main theoretical contribution is a Bernstein-von Mises type theorem (Bayesian asymptotic normality)…

A zero-inflated endemic-epidemic model with an application to measles time series in Germany

Count data with excessive zeros are often encountered when modelling infectious disease occurrence. The degree of zero inflation can vary over time due to non-epidemic periods as well as by age group or region. The existing endemic-epidemic modelling framework (aka HHH) lacks a proper treatment for surveillance data with excessive zeros as it is limited to Poisson and negative binomial distributions. In this paper, we propose a multivariate zero-inflated endemic-epidemic…

The Time-Varying Multivariate Autoregressive Index Model

Many economic variables feature changes in their conditional mean and volatility, and Time Varying Vector Autoregressive Models are often used to handle such complexity in the data. Unfortunately, when the number of series grows, they present increasing estimation and interpretation problems. This paper tries to address this issue proposing a new Multivariate Autoregressive Index model that features time varying means and volatility. Technically, we develop a new estimation…

A prediction perspective on the Wiener-Hopf equations for time series

The Wiener-Hopf equations are a Toeplitz system of linear equations that naturally arise in several applications in time series. These include the update and prediction step of the stationary Kalman filter equations and the prediction of bivariate time series. The celebrated Wiener-Hopf technique is usually used for solving these equations and is based on a comparison of coefficients in a Fourier series expansion. However, a statistical interpretation of both the method and…
