Maximum score and non-smooth M-estimators with multiway dependence

Under i.i.d. sampling, the maximum score estimator of Manski (1975) converges at the cube-root rate to a non-Gaussian limit. We show that, under multiway dependence and low-level conditions, it is asymptotically normal at a parametric rate in the smallest number of clusters and, when the cluster-level variance is non-degenerate, as fast as regular estimators such as probit. The result rests on a general theory for non-smooth M-estimators, under which a modified bootstrap is…

Panel Quantile Regression with Common Shocks

共同冲击下的面板分位数回归

This paper develops an asymptotic and inferential theory for fixed-effects panel quantile regression (FEQR) that delivers inference robust to pervasive common shocks. Such shocks induce cross-sectional dependence that is central in many economic and financial panels but largely ignored in existing FEQR theory, which typically assumes cross-sectional independence and requires $T \gg N$. We show that the standard FEQR estimator remains asymptotically normal under the mild…

Extremal Quantiles under Two-Way Clustering

双向聚类依赖下的极端分位数

This paper studies extremal quantiles under two-way clustered dependence. We show that the limiting distribution of unconditional intermediate-order tail quantiles is Gaussian. This result is notable because two-way clustering typically leads to non-Gaussian limiting behavior. Remarkably, extremal quantiles remain asymptotically Gaussian even in degenerate cases. Building on this insight, we extend our analysis to extremal quantile regression at intermediate orders.…

Enhancing the Merger Simulation Toolkit with ML/AI

用机器学习与人工智能扩展并购模拟工具

This paper develops a flexible approach to predict the price effects of horizontal mergers using ML/AI methods. While standard merger simulation techniques rely on restrictive assumptions about firm conduct, we propose a data-driven framework that relaxes these constraints when rich market data are available. We develop and identify a flexible nonparametric model of supply that nests a broad range of conduct models and cost functions. To overcome the curse of dimensionality,…

Inference in high-dimensional regression models without the exact or $L^p$ sparsity

无需精确稀疏或 Lp 稀疏条件的高维回归推断

This paper proposes a new method of inference in high-dimensional regression models and high-dimensional IV regression models. Estimation is based on a combined use of the orthogonal greedy algorithm, high-dimensional Akaike information criterion, and double/debiased machine learning. The method of inference for any low-dimensional subvector of high-dimensional parameters is based on a root-$N$ asymptotic normality, which is shown to hold without requiring the exact sparsity…

Linear programming approach to nonparametric inference under shape restrictions: with an application to regression kink designs

形状约束下非参数推断的线性规划方法:回归折点设计应用

We develop a novel method of constructing confidence bands for nonparametric regression functions under shape constraints. This method can be implemented via a linear programming, and it is thus computationally appealing. We illustrate a usage of our proposed method with an application to the regression kink design (RKD). Econometric analyses based on the RKD often suffer from wide confidence intervals due to slow convergence rates of nonparametric derivative estimators. We…
