When forecasting with economic time series data, researchers often use a restricted window of observations or downweight past observations in order to mitigate the potential effects of parameter instability. In this paper, we study the problem of selecting a window for point forecasts made at the end of the sample. We develop asymptotic approximations to the sampling properties of window selection methods, and post-window selection point forecasts, where there is local parameter instability of various sorts. We examine risk properties of point forecasts made after cross-validation to select the window, and compare this approach to some alternative methods of selecting the window. We also propose a quasi-Bayesian form of cross-validation that we find to have good risk properties.

Compositional time series frequently exhibit structural breaks due to external shocks, policy changes, or market disruptions. Standard methods either ignore such breaks or handle them through fixed effects that cannot extrapolate beyond the sample, or step-function dummies that impose instantaneous adjustment. We develop a Bayesian Dirichlet ARMA model augmented with a directional-shift intervention mechanism that captures structural breaks through three interpretable…
结构突变模型中的相关参数变化
Structural break time series models, which are commonly used in macroeconomics and finance, capture unknown structural changes by allowing for abrupt changes to model parameters. However, many specifications suffer from an over-parametrization issue, since typically all parameters have to change when a break occurs. We introduce a sparse change-point model to detect which parameters change over time. We propose a shrinkage prior distribution, which controls model parsimony…

This article proposes two distinct contributions to econometric analysis of large information sets and structural instabilities. First, it treats a regression model with time-varying coefficients, stochastic volatility, and exogenous predictors, as an equivalent high-dimensional static regression problem with thousands of covariates. Inference in this specification proceeds using Bayesian hierarchical priors that shrink the high-dimensional vector of coefficients either…
利用动态分割模型进行宏观金融预测
Dynamic partition models are used to predict movements in the term structure of interest rates. This allows one to understand historic cycles in the performance of how interest rates behave, and to offer policy makers guidance regarding future expectations on their evolution. Our approach allows for a random number of possible change points in the term structure of interest rates. We use particle learning to learn about the unobserved state variables in a new class of…
多重结构断点模型中的推断与预测
This paper develops a new Bayesian approach to structural break modeling. The focuses of the approach are the modeling of in-sample structural breaks and forecasting time series allowing out-of-sample breaks. The model has several desirable features. First, the number of regimes is not fixed but is treated as a random variable. Second, the model adopts a hierarchical prior for regime coefficients, which allows for the coefficients of one regime to contain information about…
经济时间序列的贝叶斯预测
A model is suggested to forecast economic time series. This model incorporates some innovative ideas of Harrison and Stevens [20] for building into the forecasting process important external shocks to the systems. Thus the occurrence of possibly significant real-world events may cause a fundamental change in the time series in question. The Jeffreys-Savage (JS) Bayesian theory of hypothesis testing is used to test the hypothesis that a particular event has been such as to…
