Design calculations let researchers gauge, before data is collected, whether a planned study is likely to detect an effect. In this paper, we develop such calculations for predictive models using ordinary least squares and ridge regression under leave-one-out cross-validation. To do so, we derive closed-form expressions relating the expected out-of-sample $R^2$ and the expected correlation between observed and predicted outcomes to four design-stage quantities: sample size, number of predictors, an assumed population $R^2$ ($ρ^2_{in}$) and a design efficiency factor $D^*$ (which summarizes how leverage is distributed across observations). Unlike the classical shrinkage formulas, which depend only on sample size and dimension, these are sensitive to how covariates are arranged -- to imbalance and skew. A simulation study assesses the accuracy of the formulas against realized values under a variety of data generating mechanisms. We apply the methods to a published study predicting personality from smartphone behavior and show that the design formulas would have indicated, before any analyses were run, that least squares could not be expected to beat the sample mean while ridge could. An R package, predpower, implements the calculations.
Schmelzer and Hastie prove that Markowitz's Critical Line Algorithm and the LASSO path trace the same curve. This companion note checks that result numerically with a stock LASSO solver, \texttt{lars\_path} from \texttt{scikit-learn}, and no portfolio software. It covers long--short portfolios under a leverage cap, fixed leverage with varying risk appetite, and the classical long-only, fully invested frontier. Every corner the path returns meets its own optimality conditions…
We consider the joint estimation of change-point locations and the sparsity pattern of the variance-covariance matrix, which is assumed to evolve in a piecewise constant manner. By applying Group Fused LASSO and LASSO penalties to the squared Frobenius norm, we estimate both the covariance structure and the change points. Adaptive weights are incorporated into the penalty terms to enhance change-point detection and covariance estimation accuracy. We establish the conditions…

Abstract We develop a convex-analytic framework for constructing and analyzing a broad class of penalized estimators. Our method defines penalized estimators by applying proximal operators to benchmark estimators, rather than by penalizing the benchmark criterion itself. We establish general finite-sample properties, derive unified asymptotic distribution results, and provide tractable conditions for oracle selection and oracle asymptotic efficiency. We then apply the…

Population-level heterogeneity is ubiquitous in biomedical data, where differences across demographic or clinical subgroups can substantially alter risk patterns. For example, in intensive care unit (ICU) studies, the mortality risk associated with specific admission diagnoses can vary across ethnic groups. Existing approaches for detecting risk heterogeneity are often sensitive to baseline model misspecification and regularization bias, both of which commonly arise in…

In many applications, covariates are naturally organized into groups, yet conventional group-selection methods often retain all variables within selected groups, failing to achieve within-group sparsity. To address this limitation, we propose an adaptive two-stage sparse-group selection procedure for high-dimensional quantile regression. The proposed method integrates convolution-smoothed quantile loss with $\ell_{2,0}$ and $\ell_0$ penalties to identify important groups and…

We study the fundamental limits of convex-regularized estimation in high-dimensional linear regression with right-rotationally invariant design matrices. We show that the asymptotic risks of convex-penalized least squares estimators are lower bounded by the risk of an approximate message passing algorithm known as Bayes VAMP, and we further characterize when the lower bound is attainable. As a technical ingredient in the proof of our lower bound theorem, we characterize the…
