Experiments that use covariate adaptive randomization (CAR) are commonplace in applied economics and other fields. In such experiments, the experimenter first stratifies the sample according to observed baseline covariates and then assigns treatment randomly within these strata so as to achieve balance according to pre-specified stratum-specific target assignment proportions. In this paper, we compute the semiparametric efficiency bound for estimating the average treatment effect (ATE) in such experiments with binary treatments allowing for the class of CAR procedures considered in Bugni, Canay, and Shaikh (2018, 2019). This is a broad class of procedures and is motivated by those used in practice. The stratum-specific target proportions play the role of the propensity score conditional on all baseline covariates (and not just the strata) in these experiments. Thus, the efficiency bound is a special case of the bound in Hahn (1998), but conditional on all baseline covariates. Additionally, this efficiency bound is shown to be achievable under the same conditions as those used to derive the bound by using a cross-fitted Nadaraya-Watson kernel estimator to form nonparametric regression adjustments.
We study nonparametric inference for a continuous-treatment causal dose-response curve and its first derivative under unmeasured confounding, using treatment- and outcome-inducing proxies. We establish a proximal doubly robust pseudo-outcome whose conditional mean given treatment equals the dose-response curve whenever either bridge function is correctly specified. Their (smoothed) efficient influence function representations lead to cross-fitted local-polynomial estimators…
插补就够了:平均处理效应估计的双稳健、半参数有效性与自动协变量平衡
Imputation-based causal estimation is typically viewed as relying exclusively on an outcome model, in contrast to augmented inverse-probability weighting, whose consistency is protected by fitting two nuisance models. This paper argues that this view can be misleading by highlighting a hidden dual weighting structure in least-squares sieve regression imputation. Although only outcome regressions are explicitly fitted, the resulting imputation estimator admits an exact…

Instrumental variable (IV) methods address treatment endogeneity, but with non-compliance and heterogeneous treatment effects a binary instrument generally identifies the local average treatment effect (LATE) among compliers rather than the population average treatment effect (ATE). When treatment effects and compliance probabilities are heterogeneous and dependent through latent factors, the ATE need not be identified by IV variation alone. We develop a proximal…
超越线性:多值处理污染偏误的半参数解决方案
We examine semiparametric solutions to contamination bias for nonbinary treatments. Deepening the discussion by Goldsmith-Pinkham et al. (2024), we detail how spline functions approximate conditional expectation and propensity score functions under weak functional-form assumptions. Reanalyzing 18 regressions across 11 studies, we compare standard linear regressions against parametric and semiparametric versions of three contamination-robust estimators. We document large…

Randomized trials support causal inference, but differences between trial and target populations can limit the transportability of treatment effects to real-world settings. Many existing approaches model the propensity of trial participation and can therefore be sensitive to model misspecification and weak overlap of the covariate distributions. Optimal Transport (OT) offers a different route by comparing the trial and target populations directly in covariate space. We…
NP-LEAP:借用历史数据的非参数潜在可交换性先验
Bayesian dynamic borrowing (BDB) methods leverage historical data to reduce treatment effect uncertainty, yet existing approaches rely on parametric outcome models susceptible to misspecification. We propose the nonparametric latent exchangeability prior (NP-LEAP), an outcome-agnostic, assumption-lean framework to borrow information from historical data. The NP-LEAP performs individual-level exchangeability assessment, inducing Bayesian model averaging over all possible…
