Much macroeconometric discussion has recently emphasized the economic significance of the size of the permanent component in GNP. Consequently, a large literature has developed that tries to estimate this magnitude--measured, essentially, as the spectral density of increments in GNP at frequency zero. This paper shows that, unless the permanent component is a random walk, this attention has been misplaced: in general, that quantity does not identify the magnitude of the permanent component. Further, by developing bounds on reasonable measures of this magnitude, this paper shows that a random walk specification is biased toward establishing the permanent component as important. Normality pre-tests on reduced-form innovations cannot detect whether two or more underlying structural shocks are Gaussian, and hence cannot detect a failure of identification in non-Gaussian SVARs. We propose a bootstrap-based approach that reveals such a failure. Under the null of valid identification and certain regularity conditions, the conditional bootstrap distribution of the maximum likelihood estimator of the impact matrix is asymptotically normal, so the…
矩阵值 CP 因子模型的识别问题与准极大似然估计
Matrix-valued time series, arising in diverse fields such as economics, neuroscience, and recommender systems, have become increasingly prominent in modern data analysis. Among various modeling frameworks, the matrix-variate CP-factor model represents an important and widely applicable class for capturing low-rank structures in matrix time series. In this paper, we provide a unified treatment for the identification problem of CP factor models using both analytic and…
高维近似因子时间序列模型的主成分分析:假设、渐近理论与识别
We consider estimation of large approximate factor models in high-dimensional panels of stationary time series using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We review the key results establishing the necessary and sufficient conditions for consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimators, which hold when both the cross-sectional dimension $n$ and the sample size $T$ tend to infinity. Special emphasis is placed on identification. First, we show that the common and…

Local projections (LPs) have become a standard tool for estimating dynamic effects in macroeconomics and are typically implemented using ordinary least squares (OLS) for a given lag order. We propose an alternative approach that exploits additional lags as excluded instrumental variables (IVs). Under a finite-order model with martingale-difference shocks, the resulting (optimally weighted) IV estimator is never asymptotically less efficient than OLS and, as we show, can…

We study the problem of modeling high-dimensional tensor-valued time series under a Tucker decomposition-based factor model while permitting the presence of multiple structural change points. Such data call for a method that (i) handles high dimensionality and complex dependence while achieving consistency in multiple change points and further, (ii) addresses a unique challenge posed by the multi-dimensional array setting, of identifying the modes associated with each change…

We answer the question posed in the title with a nonlinear mixed-frequency vector autoregression, estimated with Bayesian additive regression trees. The model combines monthly macro-financial variables with quarterly bank lending survey data, and identifies the dynamic responses from high-frequency policy surprises. Sign asymmetry dominates; a tightening produces monetary policy transmission mostly in line with the theoretical predictions, whereas easing of any size produces…
