In this paper, we investigate the effect of mean-nonstationarity on the first-difference generalized method of moments (FD-GMM) estimator in dynamic panel data models. We find that when data is mean-nonstationary and the variance of individual effects is significantly larger than that of disturbances, the FD-GMM estimator performs quite well. We demonstrate that this is because the correlation between the lagged dependent variable and instruments gets larger owing to the unremoved individual effects, i.e., instruments become strong. This implies that, under mean-nonstationarity, the FD-GMM estimator does not always suffer from the weak instruments problem even when data is persistent.
This paper is concerned with the findings related to the robust first-stage F-statistic in the Monte Carlo analysis of Andrews (2018), who found in a heteroskedastic grouped-data design that even for very large values of the robust F-statistic, the standard 2SLS confidence intervals had large coverage distortions. This finding appears to discredit the robust F-statistic as a test for underidentification. However, it is shown here that large values of the robust F-statistic…
In this paper we consider generalized method of moments–based (GMM-based) estimation and inference for the panel AR(1) model when the data are persistent and the time dimension of the panel is fixed. We find that the nature of the weak instruments problem of the Arellano–Bond (Arellano and Bond, 1991, Review of Economic Studies 58, 277–297) estimator depends on the distributional properties of the initial observations. Subsequently, we derive local asymptotic approximations…
This paper investigates a generalized method of moments (GMM) approach to the estimation of autoregressive roots near unity with panel data and incidental deterministic trends. Such models arise in empirical econometric studies of firm size and in dynamic panel data modeling with weak instruments. The two moment conditions in the GMM approach are obtained by constructing bias corrections to the score functions under OLS and GLS detrending, respectively. It is shown that the…
The Arellano-Bond estimator is a fundamental method for dynamic panel data models, widely used in practice. It can be severely biased when the time series dimension of the data, $T$, is long. The source of the bias is the large degree of overidentification. We propose a simple two-step approach to deal with this problem. The first step applies LASSO to the cross-section data at each time period to select the most informative moment conditions, exploiting the approximately…
We consider instrumental variables (IV) estimation of a possibly infinite order dynamic panel autoregressive (AR) process with individual effects. The estimation is based on the sieve AR approximation, with its lag order increasing with sample size. Transforming the variable to eliminate individual effects generates an endogeneity problem, particularly when the time series is only moderately long. IV approaches are useful to obtain well-behaved estimators in panels with…
Maximum Likelihood (ML) offers attractive alternatives to Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimators for dynamic panel data models. However, to date no identification-robust inference methods exist that can be used in conjunction with the ML estimators for these models. In this paper we propose ML based inference methods for panel AR(1) models with arbitrary initial conditions and heteroskedasticity that are robust to the strength of identification. We show that (Quasi)…
