We discuss techniques of estimation and inference for nonstationary nonlinear cohort panels with learning from experience, showing, inter alia, the consistency and asymptotic normality of the nonlinear least squares estimator used in empirical practice. Potential pitfalls for hypothesis testing are identified and solutions proposed. Monte Carlo simulations verify the properties of the estimator and corresponding test statistics in finite samples, while an application to a panel of survey expectations demonstrates the usefulness of the theory developed.
无限阶面板自回归过程的工具变量估计
We consider instrumental variables (IV) estimation of a possibly infinite order dynamic panel autoregressive (AR) process with individual effects. The estimation is based on the sieve AR approximation, with its lag order increasing with sample size. Transforming the variable to eliminate individual effects generates an endogeneity problem, particularly when the time series is only moderately long. IV approaches are useful to obtain well-behaved estimators in panels with…
近单位根动态面板中的 Anderson–Hsiao 估计
Limit theory is developed for the dynamic panel IV estimator in the presence of an autoregressive root near unity. In the unit root case, Anderson–Hsiao lagged variable instruments satisfy orthogonality conditions but are well known to be irrelevant. For a fixed time series sample size ( T ) IV is inconsistent and approaches a shifted Cauchy-distributed random variate as the cross-section sample size n → ∞. But when T → ∞, either for fixed n or as n → ∞, IV is $\sqrt T$ consi…
固定效应空间动态面板的估计:空间协整情形
Yu et al. (2008) establish asymptotic properties of quasi-maximum likelihood estimators for a stable spatial dynamic panel model with fixed effects when both the number of individuals n and the number of time periods T are large. This paper investigates unstable cases where there are unit roots generated by temporal and spatial correlations. We focus on the spatial cointegration model where some eigenvalues of the data generating process are equal to 1 and the outcomes of…
持久数据下动态面板模型的 GMM 估计与推断
In this paper we consider generalized method of moments–based (GMM-based) estimation and inference for the panel AR(1) model when the data are persistent and the time dimension of the panel is fixed. We find that the nature of the weak instruments problem of the Arellano–Bond (Arellano and Bond, 1991, Review of Economic Studies 58, 277–297) estimator depends on the distributional properties of the initial observations. Subsequently, we derive local asymptotic approximations…
I study randomization inference for dynamic causal effects in panels with many units and few periods when treatment is endogenous and an instrument is as good as randomly assigned only through the innovations of a first-order autoregressive assignment mechanism with unknown persistence. The persistence is a nuisance parameter in two senses: it determines which weighted average of heterogeneous causal effects the instrumented local projection estimand measures, and it governs…
将 Prais–Winsten 回归扩展至高阶自回归误差面板:模拟研究
We extend the Prais-Winsten AR(k) generalized least squares (GLS) transformation to panel data within the Beck-Katz panel-corrected standard error (PCSE) framework and implement the method in the community-contributed Stata package xtpraisk. As the panel extension of Prais-Winsten, xtpraisk is the natural comparator to xtscc, the panel extension of Newey-West and implementation of the Driscoll-Kraay estimator. We conduct a Monte Carlo simulation to validate the statistical…
