SUMMARY The problem of estimating distance to a stellar system, from measurements on the apparent magnitude of the jth brightest object in the system, reduces to estimating the location parameter of a distribution. Astronomical observations provide apparent magnitudes of only a few of the brightest objects in a system. In this connection, two theoretical problems arise. One is to find the best estimate based on available observations, and the other to determine which of the objects should be observed in order to attain the greatest precision for the estimate. It is found that, if the number of objects n in the system is large, then, depending on the luminosity function, either the apparent magnitude of the brightest or the faintest of the available objects is asymptotically sufficient for the location parameter.
