We develop a nonparametric test for deciding whether volatility of an asset follows a standard semimartingale process, with paths of finite quadratic variation, or a rough process with paths of infinite quadratic variation. The test uses the fact that volatility is rough if and only if volatility increments are negatively autocorrelated at high frequencies. It is based on the sample autocovariance of increments of spot volatility estimates computed from high-frequency asset return data. By showing a feasible CLT for this statistic under the null hypothesis of semimartingale volatility paths, we construct a test with fixed asymptotic size and an asymptotic power equal to one. The test is derived under very general conditions for the data-generating process. In particular, it is robust to jumps with arbitrary activity and to the presence of market microstructure noise. In an application of the test to high-frequency financial data, we find evidence for rough volatility. Supplementary materials for this article are available online, including a standardized description of the materials available for reproducing the work.

The association between log-price increments of exchange-traded equities, as measured by their spot correlation estimated from high-frequency data, exhibits a pronounced upwardsloping and almost piecewise linear relationship at the intraday horizon. There is notably lower—on average less positive—correlation in the morning than in the afternoon. We develop a nonparametric testing procedure to detect such variation in a correlation process. The test statistic has a known…
正定矩阵锥上强混合时间序列的 Wishart 核密度估计
A Wishart kernel density estimator (KDE) is introduced for density estimation in the cone of positive definite matrices. The estimator is boundary-aware and mitigates the boundary bias suffered by conventional KDEs, while remaining simple to implement. Its mean squared error, uniform strong consistency on expanding compact sets, and asymptotic normality are established under the Lebesgue measure and suitable mixing conditions. This work represents the first study of density…
Bergomi 型波动率模型的拟极大似然估计方法
We propose a quasi maximum likelihood estimation method for Bergomi-type stochastic volatility models with parametrized kernels, focusing on the estimation of the kernel parameters from high-frequency time-series observations of option prices. We first show that the cumulative forward variance, which can be reconstructed from option prices, solves an infinite-dimensional stochastic differential equation driven by a one-dimensional Brownian motion under the Bergomi-type…
无限变差跳跃下瞬时波动率的去偏核估计
Volatility estimation is a central problem in financial econometrics, but becomes particularly challenging when jump activity is high, a phenomenon observed empirically in highly traded financial securities. In this paper, we revisit the problem of spot volatility estimation for an Itô semimartingale with jumps of unbounded variation. We construct truncated kernel-based estimators and debiased variants that extend rate-optimal spot volatility estimation to a wider range of…
波动率恒定性的尖锐自适应非参数检验
Based on discrete observations, we develop a test to infer if the volatility function $σ(\cdot)$ within the nonparametric Gaussian white noise model $dY_t = σ(t)dW_t$ is constant. The testing procedure is shown to be minimax-optimal and adaptive for infill asymptotics and these results entail that a deviation from the null hypothesis of constancy is best measured in terms of the ratio of $σ(t)$ and its $L^2$-average. The derivation of optimal constants requires the…
波动率的已实现 Copula
We study a new measure of codependency in the second moment of a continuous-time multivariate asset price process, which we name the realized copula of volatility. The statistic is based on local volatility estimates constructed from high-frequency asset returns and affords a nonparametric estimator of the empirical copula of the latent stochastic volatility. We show consistency of our estimator with in-fill asymptotic theory, either with a fixed or increasing time span. In…
