We develop the Sample Splitting Alpha (SSA) test, a formal out-of-sample (OOS) test for evaluating whether an asset pricing factor model satisfies the zero-alpha restriction in high-dimensional settings. The test uses sample splitting to separate portfolio weight estimation from model evaluation and ridge regularization to stabilize the portfolio problem when the number of test assets is large. We show that each single split SSA statistic is asymptotically Gaussian under mild regularity conditions. For the aggregated SSA statistic used in implementation, we characterize the dependence across split statistics and compute p-values by resampling. Economically, the statistic relates to the OOS incremental spanning value of the chosen test assets relative to a candidate factor model, measured by the OOS squared information ratio. The simulation results accord with the asymptotic analysis. In the empirical application, SSA rejects some statistically constructed factor models more often than the in-sample benchmarks, despite those models' strong in-sample fit.

In high-dimensional factor pricing models, the power of regularized alpha tests depends on the ridge parameter, whose optimal value varies with the unknown direction of pricing errors. We address this tuning uncertainty by combining ridge-specific p-values using the Cauchy rule. The resulting test retains the least-squares alpha estimator and residual sample covariance and accommodates more assets than observations. We establish the joint Gaussian limits of the component…

This paper studies alpha testing in a high-dimensional conditional time-varying factor model with temporally dependent observations. Both factor loadings and alpha processes are allowed to vary smoothly over time, and the cross-sectional dimension may be comparable to or larger than the sample size. Using a B-spline sieve method, we develop a sum-type test for dense alternatives, a max-type test for sparse alternatives, and a Cauchy combination test for adaptive inference.…

This paper investigates estimation and inference of a Spatial Arbitrage Pricing Theory (SAPT) model that integrates spatial interactions with multi-factor analysis, accommodating both observable and latent factors. Building on the classical mean-variance analysis, we introduce a class of Spatial Capital Asset Pricing Models (SCAPM) that account for spatial effects in high-dimensional assets, where we define {\it spatial rho} as a counterpart to market beta in CAPM. We then…
具有高维资产特征的动态潜在因子模型
We develop novel estimation procedures with supporting econometric theory for a dynamic latent-factor model with high-dimensional asset characteristics, that is, the number of characteristics is on the order of the sample size. Utilizing the Double Selection Lasso estimator, our procedure employs regularization to eliminate characteristics with low signal-to-noise ratios yet maintains asymptotically valid inference for asset pricing tests. The crypto asset class is…

= 0 against sparse alternatives where the null hypothesis is violated only by a couple of components. Existing tests based on quadratic forms such as the Wald statistic often suffer from low powers due to the accumulation of errors in estimating high-dimensional parameters. More powerful tests for sparse alternatives such as thresholding and extreme-value tests, on the other hand, require either stringent conditions or bootstrap to derive the null distribution and often…

We propose a novel technique to boost the power of testing a high-dimensional vector $H:\btheta=0$ against sparse alternatives where the null hypothesis is violated only by a couple of components. Existing tests based on quadratic forms such as the Wald statistic often suffer from low powers due to the accumulation of errors in estimating high-dimensional parameters. More powerful tests for sparse alternatives such as thresholding and extreme-value tests, on the other hand,…
