In many complex systems, such as river networks and financial markets, extreme events propagate from causes to their effects, and the largest observations carry the most information about the underlying causal structure. Existing methods for causal discovery in extremes, however, are tailored to specific mechanisms, such as linear or max-linear models. This work develops causal discovery for heavy-tailed homogeneous structural causal models, a flexible class that contains linear, max-linear and norm-type mechanisms, which may differ from node to node. In these models, the causal structure is encoded by ancestral impulse responses, which measure how a shock at one node is transmitted to its descendants. We propose the extremal minimum ratio estimator of these responses, which uses only observations in which the potential cause is extreme. The estimator is consistent under regular variation alone, and we derive its exact rates of convergence and limiting distributions, which depend on both the causal relation and the type of mechanism. Building on these rates, we construct consistent estimators of the causal order and of the full set of ancestral relations, using a threshold that adapts to the data and requires no knowledge of the tail index. The method is illustrated on simulated data and on river discharges in the upper Danube basin.

Causal discovery in multivariate extremes is challenging because extreme observations are sparse, dependent, and often affected by latent common shocks. Existing approaches focus on undirected extremal dependence, require prior graph restriction, and do not scale beyond small systems. We introduce tail-induced asymmetry as a principle for causal directionality in heavy-tailed systems, where extreme events propagate asymmetrically so that forward tail prediction is…

This paper evaluates the causal impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) adoption on productivity and systemic risk in the U.S. banking sector. Using a novel dataset linking SEC 10-Q filings to Federal Reserve regulatory data for 809 financial institutions over 2018--2025, we employ two complementary identification strategies: Dynamic Spatial Durbin Models (DSDM) to capture network spillovers and Synthetic Difference-in-Differences (SDID) for causal inference…
欧洲银行网络传染动态:基于 Navier–Stokes 的系统性风险评估框架
This paper develops a continuous functional framework for analyzing contagion dynamics in financial networks, extending the Navier-Stokes-based approach to network-structured spatial processes. We model financial distress propagation as a diffusion process on weighted networks, deriving a network diffusion equation from first principles that predicts contagion decay depends on the network's algebraic connectivity through the relation $κ= \sqrt{λ_2/D}$, where $λ_2$ is the…
动态空间处理效应与网络脆弱性:2008年金融危机的理论与证据
The 2008 financial crisis exposed fundamental vulnerabilities in interconnected banking systems, yet existing frameworks fail to integrate spatial propagation with network contagion mechanisms. This paper develops a unified spatial-network framework to analyze systemic risk dynamics, revealing three critical findings that challenge conventional wisdom. First, banking consolidation paradoxically increased systemic fragility: while bank numbers declined 47.3% from 2007 to…
一般条件下极端事件因果效应的识别与推断
Understanding the propagation of extreme events is important in many economic and environmental applications, yet most econometric methods for causal inference focus on average effects rather than tail behavior. This paper studies the identification of causal relations in extremes and derives resulting estimators and their asymptotic inference. As measure of causal dependence between extreme realizations of variables, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the Causal Tail…

ABSTRACT We estimate the causal effects of macroprudential policies on the entire distribution of GDP growth for advanced European economies using a narrative‐identification strategy in a quantile‐regression framework. While macroprudential policy has near‐zero effects on the center of the GDP‐growth distribution, tighter policy brings benefits by reducing the variance of future growth, significantly boosting the left tail while simultaneously reducing the right. Assessing a…
