Summary This paper proposes a new panel data approach to identify and estimate the time‐varying average treatment effect (ATE). The approach allows for treatment effect heterogeneity that depends on unobserved fixed effects. In the presence of this type of heterogeneity, existing panel data approaches identify the ATE for limited subpopulations only. In contrast, the proposed approach identifies and estimates the ATE for the entire population. The approach relies on the linear fixed effects specification of potential outcome equations and uses exogenous variables that are correlated with the fixed effects. I apply the approach to study the impact of a mother's smoking during pregnancy on her child's birth weight.
Many real-world policies and business interventions require assessing short-term effects to inform timely decisions, even though most causal inference methods focus on long-term average treatment effects. In this article, we introduce average treatment effect localization (ATEL), which captures localized, short-term policy impacts in panel data settings with a single treated unit and provides early indicators of policy impact. To accommodate both time-varying and nonlinear…
We study difference-in-differences (DiD) designs in which a binary treatment changes an endogenous time-varying (continuous, discrete, or mixed) mediator that in turn affects an outcome. We allow for the inclusion of lagged outcomes in the model. Under our model assumptions, we show that the usual DiD estimand mixes the average direct effect on the treated, the average indirect effect, and a trend bias term. A two-way fixed effects (TWFE) regression that controls for the…
I study dynamic treatment effects in panel data under staggered adoption when treatment timing depends jointly on unobserved time-invariant heterogeneity and time-varying pretreatment covariates, including lagged outcomes. Untreated potential outcomes follow a nonparametric dynamic panel model that allows flexible interactions between time-varying covariates and latent heterogeneity. I use pretreatment outcome histories to find individuals with similar time-invariant latent…
We propose a generalization of the synthetic control methods to the setting with dynamic treatment effects, in which each unit receives multiple treatments sequentially, according to an adaptive policy that depends on a latent, endogenously time-varying confounding state. Under a low-rank latent factor model assumption, which admits linear time-varying and time-invariant dynamic triangular systems as special cases, we develop an identification strategy for any unit-specific…

This paper develops linear estimators for structural and causal parameters of nonseparable models using panel data. These models incorporate unobserved, time-varying, individual heterogeneity, which may be correlated with the regressors. Estimation is based on an approximation of a conditional average potential outcome by a linear sieve specification with individual-specific parameters. Effects of interest are estimated by a bias corrected average of individual ridge…
