Abstract Further sampling properties of previously derived (Zellner 1975) MELO estimates for reciprocals and ratios of parameters and for structural coefficients of econometric models are presented. Approximate small-sample moments and risk functions of MELO estimators for these problems are derived and compared with those of other well-known estimators. The exact finite sample distribution of the MELO reciprocal mean estimator is derived and compared with that of the maximum likelihood estimator. Properties of alternative structural coefficient estimators are compared with those of the MELO estimator both theoretically and in terms of two applications.
理性疏忽—加性随机效用模型的估计
This paper develops likelihood-based estimation for parametric rational inattention--additive random utility models. We establish consistency and asymptotic normality of the exact maximum likelihood estimator and provide conditions under which the simulated estimator shares its asymptotic distribution. To implement estimation, we develop Newton--BA, a KKT-guided hybrid of Newton--Raphson and Blahut--Arimoto (BA). The algorithm accommodates both interior and boundary…
扰动效用模型的 Fenchel–Young 估计量
Perturbed Utility Models (PUMs) represent discrete choice as utility maximization under convex perturbation or regularization, encompassing a broad class of choice models, including Multinomial Logit (MNL) and models that permit zero choice probabilities. Because, for general perturbations, maximum likelihood may be non-convex, and the negative log-likelihood is infinite when a sparse model assigns zero probability to an observed choice, we specialize the Fenchel--Young…
动态离散选择与逆强化学习:从人类行为推断偏好和信念
This article surveys two deeply connected literatures that approach the same fundamental problem from different disciplinary traditions: dynamic discrete choice (DDC) in structural econometrics and inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) in machine learning. Both seek to infer the preferences of decision makers from observed sequential behavior, assuming that individuals act to maximize an expected reward function within a dynamic, uncertain environment formalized as a Markov…
利用异方差神经网络学习双向因果交互
Estimating contemporaneous bidirectional interactions from observational data is difficult because each outcome is endogenous to the other, while flexible regressions may capture only reduced-form dependence. This paper proposes SEM-DNN, a heteroscedastic neural simultaneous-equation estimator that learns reciprocal structural interactions without external instruments. Identification exploits conditional covariance diagonalization: when structural shocks have zero…
大型多维网络中的统计推断
We propose the Polyads estimator, a new method to estimate structural parameters in weighted multi-way networks while controlling for rich, arbitrary structures of fixed effects. The method is based on a series of classification tasks and is agnostic to both the number and structure of fixed effects. Unlike full maximum likelihood, our estimator does not suffer from the incidental parameter problem: it is consistent and satisfies a Central Limit Theorem with no asymptotic…
政权更替的实证全局博弈模型
Global games theory provides a tractable framework for analyzing coordination problems with multiple equilibria, with regime overthrow serving as a canonical application. A large empirical literature on coups d'état examines the relationship between country-level characteristics, coup occurrence, and coup success using reduced-form approaches that leave the underlying coordination problem implicit. Bridging these literatures, we develop an estimable global games model of…
