This article studies panel data models with two-dimensional unobserved slope heterogeneity and interactive fixed effects. We propose a two-step approach to estimate the parameters in the model. We apply the proposed model to estimate heterogeneous treatment effects at both individual and aggregate levels. Monte Carlo simulations show that the proposed estimators perform remarkably well in finite samples in comparison with some existing methods such as the synthetic control ones. We apply our method to study the effect of economic liberalization on economic growth and find a positive and significant aggregate average treatment effect on the treated.
处理效应异质性与交互固定效应:会不会控制过度?
This paper studies the interactive fixed effects (IFE) estimator in a panel-data setting with heterogeneous treatment effects. We show that, if the treatment-effect heterogeneity admits a linear factor structure, the IFE estimator could fail to recover the average treatment effect on the treated units. The problem arises because the interactive fixed effects absorb the heterogeneity in the treatment effect, creating a \textit{bad-control} problem. With time-invariant factors…
高维面板数据中的分位数处理效应
We introduce novel estimators for quantile causal effects with high dimensional panel data (large $N$ and $T$), where only one or a few units are affected by the intervention or policy. Our method extends the generalized synthetic control method \citep{xu_2017} from average treatment effects on the treated to quantile treatment effects on the treated, allowing the underlying factor structure to change across the quantile of the interested outcome distribution. Our method…
异质性面板模型的协变量调整深度因果学习
This paper studies the task of estimating heterogeneous treatment effects in causal panel data models, in the presence of covariate effects. We propose a novel Covariate-Adjusted Deep Causal Learning (CoDEAL) for panel data models, that employs flexible model structures and powerful neural network architectures to cohesively deal with the underlying heterogeneity and nonlinearity of both panel units and covariate effects. The proposed CoDEAL integrates nonlinear covariate…
Summary In this survey we discuss the recent causal panel data literature. This recent literature has focused on credibly estimating causal effects of binary interventions in settings with longitudinal data, emphasising practical advice for empirical researchers. It pays particular attention to heterogeneity in the causal effects, often in situations where few units are treated and with particular structures on the assignment pattern. The literature has extended earlier work…

交互固定效应面板模型中处理效应的置信区间
We augment the factor-based estimation of treatment effects proposed by Bai and Ng (2021) with easy-to-implement and nonparametric confidence intervals of treatment effects on every treated unit at every post-treatment time. The construction of confidence intervals entails a residual-based bootstrap resampling procedure. This method does not rely on any parametric assumption on the distribution of idiosyncratic errors and it is robust to weak cross-sectional and time-series…
