This paper considers the problem of ranking objects based on their latent merits using data from pairwise interactions. We allow for incomplete observation of these interactions and study what can be inferred about rankings in such settings. First, we show that identification of the ranking depends on a tradeoff between the tournament graph and the link function: in parametric models, such as the Bradley-Terry-Luce, rankings are point identified even with sparse graphs, whereas nonparametric link models require dense graphs. Second, moving beyond point identification, we characterize the identified set in the nonparametric link model under any tournament structure and represent it through moment inequalities. Finally, we propose a likelihood-based statistic to test whether a ranking belongs to the identified set. We study two testing procedures: one is finite sample valid but computationally intensive; the other is easy to implement and pointwise asymptotically valid. We illustrate our results using Brazilian employer-employee data and reject the hypothesis that the PageRank firm ordering constructed from job-to-job transitions belongs to the identified set.

This paper considers nonlinear dynamic models where the main parameter of interest is a nonnegative matrix characterizing the network (contagion) effects. This network matrix is usually constrained either by assuming a limited number of nonzero elements (sparsity), or by considering a reduced rank approach for nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF). We follow the latter approach and develop a new probabilistic NMF method. We introduce a new Identifying Maximum Likelihood…

This paper studies (nonparametric) partial identification of treatment response with social interactions. It imposes conditions motivated by economic theory on the primitives of the model, that is, the structural equations, and shows that they imply shape restrictions on the distribution of potential outcomes via monotone comparative statics. The econometric framework is tractable and allows for counterfactual predictions in models with multiple equilibria. Under three sets…
Experiments with spillovers create incentives for strategic behavior: when one household member's treatment can affect another, take-up decisions become interdependent. We propose an instrumental-variables framework grounded in game theory, in which take-up is a Nash equilibrium among a small number of agents, and all variables are discrete. Under minimal assumptions, without specifying how equilibria are selected, we derive sharp non-parametric bounds for direct, indirect,…

Which regional exposure conclusions are identified when public data do not observe buyer-seller links across states? We study this question by treating the missing intermediate-input spatial kernel as an unknown coupling constrained by regional activity margins, support restrictions, and auxiliary shipment moments. For linear exposure statistics, the sharp identified set is computed by transportation linear programs. Applying the method to U.S. state-sector data, we find…

Treatment noncompliance is pervasive in infectious disease cluster-randomized trials. Although all individuals within a cluster are assigned the same treatment condition, the treatment uptake status may vary across individuals due to noncompliance. We propose a semiparametric framework to evaluate the individual compliance effect and network assignment effect within principal stratum exhibiting different patterns of noncompliance. The individual compliance effect captures…

This paper studies a nonseparable model for dyadic outcomes, such as bilateral trade flows, in which the outcome depends on both agents' characteristics and on a scalar unobservable through an unknown function increasing in that unobservable. I establish identification of a normalized structural function and the error distribution, propose kernel plug-in estimators, and derive a two-regime central limit theory under dyadic dependence in which a shared-agent variance…
