Among the nonparametric methods of estimating the number of communities (K) in a community detection problem, methods based on the spectrum of the Bethe Hessian matrices (Hζ with the scalar parameter ζ) have garnered much popularity for their simplicity, computational efficiency, and robustness to the sparsity of data. For certain heuristic choices of ζ, such methods have been shown to be consistent for networks with N nodes with a common expected degree of ω( log N). In this article, we obtain several finite sample results to show that if the input network is generated from either stochastic block models or degree-corrected block models, and if ζ is chosen from a certain interval, then the associated spectral methods based on Hζ is consistent for estimating K for the sub-logarithmic sparse regime, when the expected maximum degree is both o( log N) and ω(1), under some mild conditions even in the situation when K increases with N. We also propose a method to estimate the aforementioned interval empirically, which enables us to develop a consistent K estimation procedure in the sparse regime. We evaluate the performance of the resulting estimation procedure theoretically, also empirically through extensive simulation studies and application to a comprehensive collection of real-world network data. Supplementary materials for this article are available online.
图分割贝叶斯因果森林:空间异质性处理效应估计
In spatial observational studies, treatment assignment and outcomes often exhibit spatial dependence patterns, and treatment effects may vary across space and subpopulations due to both measured and unmeasured spatially structured confounders. Accounting for spatial dependence while estimating heterogeneous treatment effects (HTEs) is a central task in spatial causal inference. Causal Bayesian additive regression tree methods are popular nonparametric methods for modeling…

Treatment noncompliance is pervasive in infectious disease cluster-randomized trials. Although all individuals within a cluster are assigned the same treatment condition, the treatment uptake status may vary across individuals due to noncompliance. We propose a semiparametric framework to evaluate the individual compliance effect and network assignment effect within principal stratum exhibiting different patterns of noncompliance. The individual compliance effect captures…
战略网络形成模型中的单网络有限样本推断
We develop a finite-sample valid inference procedure for strategic network formation models with endogenous network statistics, using only a single observed network. We impose no restrictions on network density, equilibrium selection, or the dependence structure induced by strategic interaction. Using a "bounding-by-c" technique, we obtain realization-wise sandwich inequalities whose middle term depends only on exogenous covariates and i.i.d. pairwise shocks. These…

Many choices persist over time and are made among friends. Teenagers who smoke tend to keep smoking, and they tend to have friends who smoke. Part of this persistence is habit, but part may come from characteristics researchers do not observe, such as a taste for risk, that shape both whether a student smokes and whom they befriend. Methods that treat friendships as given cannot separate the two when the characteristic changes over time. This paper shows how the friendship…

This paper studies a nonseparable model for dyadic outcomes, such as bilateral trade flows, in which the outcome depends on both agents' characteristics and on a scalar unobservable through an unknown function increasing in that unobservable. I establish identification of a normalized structural function and the error distribution, propose kernel plug-in estimators, and derive a two-regime central limit theory under dyadic dependence in which a shared-agent variance…

Many applications in public health, environmental science, and economics feature spillovers across connected units, violating the Stable Unit Treatment Value Assumption (SUTVA) underlying classical quantile treatment effect methods. We develop a general framework for defining, estimating, and conducting inference for quantile exposure effects (QEEs) under network interference, encompassing quantile direct and spillover effects as leading cases. Studying QEEs under…
