This article considers the problem of inference in observational studies with time-varying adoption of treatment. In addition to an unconfoundedness assumption that the potential outcomes are independent of the times at which units adopt treatment conditional on the units’ observed characteristics, our analysis assumes that the time at which each unit adopts treatment follows a Cox proportional hazards model. This assumption permits the time at which each unit adopts treatment to depend on the observed characteristics of the unit, but imposes the restriction that the probability of multiple units adopting treatment at the same time is zero. In this context, we study randomization tests of a null hypothesis that specifies that there is no treatment effect for all units and all time periods in a distributional sense. We first show that an infeasible test that treats the parameters of the Cox model as known has rejection probability under the null hypothesis no greater than the nominal level in finite samples. Since these parameters are unknown in practice, this result motivates a feasible test that replaces these parameters with consistent estimators. While the resulting test does not need to have the same finite-sample validity as the infeasible test, we show that it has limiting rejection probability under the null hypothesis no greater than the nominal level. In a simulation study, we examine the practical relevance of our theoretical results, including robustness to misspecification of the model for the time at which each unit adopts treatment. Finally, we provide an empirical application of our methodology using the synthetic control-based test statistic and tobacco legislation data found in Abadie, Diamond and Hainmueller. 平均处理效应局部化:合成控制中的投影方法
Many real-world policies and business interventions require assessing short-term effects to inform timely decisions, even though most causal inference methods focus on long-term average treatment effects. In this article, we introduce average treatment effect localization (ATEL), which captures localized, short-term policy impacts in panel data settings with a single treated unit and provides early indicators of policy impact. To accommodate both time-varying and nonlinear…
双重差分与合成控制的结合:双重稳健识别和估计
Difference-in-Differences (DiD) and Synthetic Control (SC) are widely used methods for causal inference in panel data, each with distinct strengths and limitations. We propose a novel method for short-panel causal inference that integrates the advantages of both approaches. Our method delivers a doubly robust identification strategy for the average treatment effect on the treated (ATT) under either of two non-nested assumptions: parallel trends or a group-level SC condition.…

Empirical studies often estimate several synthetic-control or synthetic Difference-in-Differences effects from a common donor pool and then summarize their heterogeneity. Because the same donors enter several comparisons, the first-stage errors are jointly distributed and affect different targets differently. We characterize three regimes for linear fixed-set summaries: nonconcentration, root-rate donor exposure, and donornegligibility. We also show that removing…
利用因子模型进行因果推断
We develop a factor-model framework for causal inference in panels with policy interventions. Treatment effects are represented as structural changes in treated units' exposure to latent common shocks and, in extensions, changes in the factor process itself. The approach does not impose the standard parallel-trends restriction, accommodates one or many treated units, and targets systematic effects when unit-time idiosyncratic effects are not point identified. We provide…

Synthetic control (SC) methods are among the most widely used tools for causal inference without randomization. The standard Gaussian confidence interval around the estimated effect is simple, fast, and reliably directional when the treatment signal is strong, so practitioners default to it for good reason. Most treated populations, however, are bottom-heavy in intensity, and for them the SC model's systematic bias rivals or exceeds the signal even under good pre-treatment…
