This study proposes DisSim-FinBERT, a novel framework that integrates Discourse Simplification (DisSim) with Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) to enhance sentiment prediction in complex financial texts. By simplifying intricate documents such as Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes, DisSim improves the precision of aspect identification, resulting in sentiment predictions that align more closely with economic events. The model preserves the original informational content and captures the inherent volatility of financial language, offering a more nuanced and accurate interpretation of long-form financial communications. This approach provides a practical tool for policymakers and analysts aiming to extract actionable insights from central bank narratives and other detailed economic documents.
Two frequent approaches for identifying structural VARs are external instruments, which carry economic content but are often weak, and non-Gaussianity of the shocks, which provides statistical identification but carries no economic meaning. We combine the two strategies in a single generalized method of moments framework. This hybrid approach point-identifies the target shocks while also identifying the non-target shocks up to sign and ordering. Under suitable rank…

We propose a multilevel main effects matrix factor model (MMEFM) to extract meaningful row and column effects from groups of matrix data. As a generalization of a multilevel matrix factor model, we provide rigorous definitions of MMEFM and identifications, together with iterative algorithms for the estimators of all global and local components in the main effects and common component, including global/local main effects and core ranks, with rates of convergence spelt out. An…

Matrix-valued time series, arising in diverse fields such as economics, neuroscience, and recommender systems, have become increasingly prominent in modern data analysis. Among various modeling frameworks, the matrix-variate CP-factor model represents an important and widely applicable class for capturing low-rank structures in matrix time series. In this paper, we provide a unified treatment for the identification problem of CP factor models using both analytic and…

We consider estimation of large approximate factor models in high-dimensional panels of stationary time series using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We review the key results establishing the necessary and sufficient conditions for consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimators, which hold when both the cross-sectional dimension $n$ and the sample size $T$ tend to infinity. Special emphasis is placed on identification. First, we show that the common and…

Local projections (LPs) have become a standard tool for estimating dynamic effects in macroeconomics and are typically implemented using ordinary least squares (OLS) for a given lag order. We propose an alternative approach that exploits additional lags as excluded instrumental variables (IVs). Under a finite-order model with martingale-difference shocks, the resulting (optimally weighted) IV estimator is never asymptotically less efficient than OLS and, as we show, can…
We propose a novel framework in high-dimensional factor models to simultaneously analyze multiple tensor time series, each with potentially different tensor orders and dimensionality. The connection between different tensor time series is through their global factors that are correlated to each other. A salient feature of our model is that when all tensor time series have the same order, it can be regarded as an extension of multilevel factor models from vectors to general…
