This paper proposes a quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) estimator for break points in high-dimensional factor models, specifically accounting for multiple structural breaks. We begin by establishing a necessary and sufficient condition to categorize two distinct types of breaks in factor loadings: singular changes and rotational changes. The analysis of the nearly singular subsample covariance matrices of the pseudo-factors plays a key role in our approach. It allows us to demonstrate that the QML estimator precisely identifies the true breakpoint with probability tending to one for singular changes. For rotational changes, we demonstrate that the estimator exhibits stochastically bounded estimation errors, implying break fraction consistency. Furthermore, we introduce an information criterion to estimate the number of breaks, proving that it can detect the true number with probability tending to one. Monte Carlo simulations confirm the strong finite sample performance of our proposed methods. Finally, we provide an empirical example to estimate structural breakpoints in the FRED-MD dataset spanning 1959 to 2024.

拟最大似然断点估计的锐信噪比阈值
We establish a sharp pathwise signal-to-noise criterion for quasi-maximum-likelihood (QML) estimation of a dominant breakpoint in the second-moment structure of a multivariate time series: the QML estimator is consistent whenever the between-regime contrast exceeds the within-regime fluctuation by an explicit factor, and below this threshold global recovery can fail. Two innovations drive the result. First, the framework is pathwise: no stochastic model is imposed on the…
高维因子模型突变点的拟极大似然估计
This paper proposes a quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) estimator of the break point for large-dimensional factor models with a single structural break in the factor loading matrix. We show that the QML estimator is consistent for the true break point when the covariance matrix of the pre- or post-break factor loading (or both) is singular. Consistency here means that the deviation of the estimated break date from the true break date k0 converges to zero as the sample size…
高维因子模型断点的准极大似然估计
This paper estimates the break point for large-dimensional factor models with a single structural break in factor loadings at a common unknown date. First, we propose a quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) estimator of the change point based on the second moments of factors, which are estimated by principal component analysis. We show that the QML estimator performs consistently when the covariance matrix of the pre- or post-break factor loading, or both, is singular. When the…

We study the problem of modeling high-dimensional tensor-valued time series under a Tucker decomposition-based factor model while permitting the presence of multiple structural change points. Such data call for a method that (i) handles high dimensionality and complex dependence while achieving consistency in multiple change points and further, (ii) addresses a unique challenge posed by the multi-dimensional array setting, of identifying the modes associated with each change…
基于典型相关分析的高维变换因子模型结构变化检测
This paper develops a canonical-correlation-based method for detecting structural changes in high-dimensional transformed factor models. The proposed approach exploits the low-rank canonical-correlation structure induced by dynamically dependent common factors, while serially uncorrelated idiosyncratic components correspond to a noise subspace with zero canonical correlations. We construct an eigenvalue-ratio criterion that measures residual dynamic dependence in the…
