Summary This paper proposes a framework to model welfare effects that are associated with a price change in a population of heterogeneous consumers. The framework is similar to that of Hausman and Newey ( Econometrica , 1995, 63 , 1445–1476), but allows for more general forms of heterogeneity. Individual demands are characterized by a general model that is nonparametric in the regressors, as well as monotonic in unobserved heterogeneity, allowing us to identify the distribution of welfare effects. We first argue why a decision maker should care about this distribution. Then we establish constructive identification, propose a sample counterparts estimator, and analyze its large‐sample properties. Finally, we apply all concepts to measuring the heterogeneous effect of a change of gasoline price using US consumer data and find very substantial differences in individual effects across quantiles.

We first provide inference on the quantile function of the bid distribution in firstprice or descending auctions, and the quantile function of the value distribution in second-price or ascending auctions, with a known number of bidders with symmetric independent private values. Specifically, we provide finite-sample, nonparametric, tuning parameter-free, uniform confidence bands for these quantile functions when observing only the transaction price. We also show how these…

When agents choose among options with unobserved attributes to maximize expected utility, their choices conflate preferences with beliefs about those attributes. We develop a novel theory-driven identification strategy for such settings, showing that compensating differentials separately identify beliefs from preferences. Noting that workers’ preferences and beliefs shape labor market outcomes, yet remain understudied, we apply our method to provide the first evidence on the…

Randomized experiments with ordinal outcomes are common across scientific applications, but conventional causal estimands such as the average treatment effect are difficult to interpret because ordinal categories lack meaningful numerical spacing. Two interpretable estimands, the probabilities that the treatment is beneficial and strictly beneficial, depend on the joint distribution of the potential outcomes and are therefore not identifiable from observed data. The sharp…

We propose Low-Rank Quantile Surfaces (LRQS), a bivariate causal model in which, in the causal direction, an unknown monotone transformation of the conditional quantile surface admits a low-rank functional decomposition. LRQS subsumes location-scale noise models and post-nonlinear heteroscedastic noise models, while allowing multiple quantile bases to represent changes beyond location-scale effects. We prove generic identifiability of LRQS: the transformed quantile surface…
Summary This paper studies identification and doubly robust (DR) estimation of quantile treatment effects (QTEs) in difference-in-discontinuities (diff-in-disc) designs when a new treatment is introduced in the post period and a confounding discontinuous policy is present in both periods. We show that QTEs are point identified under a conditional stable-distributional-effect assumption for the confounding treatment, a restriction that is analogous to the distributional…

This paper introduces a novel penalized spatial function-on-function quantile regression framework for analyzing spatially indexed functional data, bridging a critical gap between spatial functional models and quantile regression. Our work makes three key contributions. First, we propose the first spatial function-on-function quantile regression model that jointly accounts for spatial correlation across curves through a functional spatial autoregressive structure while…
