Summary The analysis of non-Gaussian time series by using state space models is considered from both classical and Bayesian perspectives. The treatment in both cases is based on simulation using importance sampling and antithetic variables; Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are not employed. Non-Gaussian disturbances for the state equation as well as for the observation equation are considered. Methods for estimating conditional and posterior means of functions of the state vector given the observations, and the mean-square errors of their estimates, are developed. These methods are extended to cover the estimation of conditional and posterior densities and distribution functions. The choice of importance sampling densities and antithetic variables is discussed. The techniques work well in practice and are computationally efficient. Their use is illustrated by applying them to a univariate discrete time series, a series with outliers and a volatility series.
Probabilistic forecasting is central to decision-making under uncertainty, yet its methodological landscape has become increasingly fragmented across temporal and spatiotemporal forecasting, statistical modeling, machine learning, and deep generative modeling. This survey develops a unified perspective by organizing probabilistic forecasting methods according to where and how uncertainty is introduced into the forecasting pipeline. Our taxonomy connects model-agnostic…

This work presents DPQBootstrap, a probabilistic resampling method for time series based on a Dirichlet quantile bootstrap and rank-based temporal reconstruction. The method aims to generate pseudo-series that preserve the main characteristics of the original series, including variability, quantiles, extreme values, and part of its temporal dependence. A simulation study compares DPQBootstrap with the Maximum Entropy Bootstrap implemented in the meboot package across eight…
Conditional quantiles are central to asymmetric decision losses, tail-risk assessment, and interval forecasts, but Bayesian quantile regression for nonlinear time series can be difficult when the temporal feature vector is high-dimensional. We develop the quantile deep echo state network (Q-DESN), a Bayesian quantile regression model conditional on fixed features generated by a deep echo state network. Conditional on a specified reservoir construction and feature map,…
Minimax-optimal rates for multivariate distribution estimation are known to suffer from the curse of dimensionality. We propose a sparse Bayesian network approach in which each conditional probability is estimated using sparsity-aware conditional mean methods. The resulting estimator, \textit{BAyesian Network Distribution regression} (BAND), handles mixed data types in high-dimensional time series and achieves polynomial total variation convergence rates while allowing the…
We present the R package exdqlm for Bayesian quantile regression, with primary emphasis on dynamic state-space quantile models for time series. The package is built around extended dynamic quantile linear models (exDQLMs), which use the extended asymmetric Laplace (exAL) family, a parametric extension of the asymmetric Laplace (AL) distribution commonly used in quantile regression. The software provides posterior simulation via Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and fast…
Grouped income data contain only limited information about the evolution of income distributions over time. This paper develops a Bayesian state-space model for the generalized beta distribution of the second kind (GB2) to estimate dynamic income distributions using repeated grouped income data. By borrowing information across adjacent periods through the latent GB2 parameters, the proposed framework improves estimation precision relative to independent cross-sectional…
