The goal of this paper is to extend the nonparametric estimation of Impulse Response Functions (IRF) by means of local projections in the nonlinear dynamic framework. We discuss the existence of a nonlinear autoregressive representation for Markov processes and explain how their IRFs are directly linked to the Nonlinear Local Projection (NLP), as in the case for the linear setting. We present a fully nonparametric LP estimator in the one dimensional nonlinear framework, compare its asymptotic properties to that of IRFs implied by the nonlinear autoregressive model and show that the two approaches are asymptotically equivalent. This extends the well-known result in the linear autoregressive model by Plagborg-Moller and Wolf (2017). We also consider extensions to the multivariate framework through the lens of semiparametric models, and demonstrate that the indirect approach by the NLP is less accurate than the direct estimation approach of the IRF.
观察性时间序列动态因果效应的半参数推断
In observational time series, statistical inference for dynamic causal effects of a one-time intervention across horizons is complicated by high-dimensional observed pre-treatment information, unmeasured confounding, and serial dependence. To address these challenges, we develop a semiparametric framework for inference from a single serially dependent time series, integrating debiased machine learning with instrumental variables through buffered block cross-fitting. Under…
递归非线性脉冲响应函数的无带宽推断
Recursive nonlinear impulse responses require an estimated innovation law whenever the impact shock is normalized by innovation ranks and future innovations are integrated out. The closest semiparametric recursive construction in the literature estimates the relevant innovation quantile functions smoothly and discusses a direct empirical-residual implementation without developing its complete first-order inference theory. We tackle this gap in a finite-dimensional nonlinear…
半参数局部投影
We propose a semiparametric local projection estimator of nonlinear impulse response functions for a broad class of structural dynamic models relevant for applied macroeconomics, including models with nonlinearly transformed regressors, state dependent coefficients, and nonlinear interactions between shocks and state variables. The estimator is based on a doubly robust moment condition that identifies the average response function as a linear functional of a nonparametric…
用双重/去偏机器学习对脉冲响应函数进行半参数推断
We introduce a double/debiased machine learning estimator for the impulse response function in settings where a time series of interest is subjected to multiple discrete treatments, assigned over time, which can have a causal effect on future outcomes. The proposed estimator can rely on fully nonparametric relations between treatment and outcome variables, opening up the possibility to use flexible machine learning approaches to estimate impulse response functions. To this…
高维半参数高斯 Copula 向量自回归模型的估计与推断
This paper develops simple, robust estimation and inference methods for the transition matrix of a high-dimensional semiparametric Gaussian copula vector autoregressive process. Our estimator is based on rank estimators of the large variance and auto-covariance matrices of a transformed latent high-dimensional Gaussian process. We derive rates of convergence of our estimator based on which we develop de-biased inference for Granger causality. Numerical results demonstrate…

Inaccurately imposing Gaussian distributional assumptions in standard multivariate time series models does not affect inference on the autoregressive coefficients but distorts both classical and Bayesian inference on the volatility matrix whenever the true error distribution has excess kurtosis relative to the multivariate normal density. Inference on the intercept is also affected whenever the innovations are generated from a non-symmetric distribution. As a result of…
