We use a dynamic panel data model to generate density forecasts for daily active Covid-19 infections for a panel of countries/regions. Our specification that assumes the growth rate of active infections can be represented by autoregressive fluctuations around a downward sloping deterministic trend function with a break. Our fully Bayesian approach allows us to flexibly estimate the cross-sectional distribution of slopes and then implicitly use this distribution as prior to construct Bayes forecasts for the individual time series. We find some evidence that information from locations with an early outbreak can sharpen forecast accuracy for late locations. There is generally a lot of uncertainty about the evolution of active infection, due to parameter and shock uncertainty, in particular before and around the peak of the infection path. Over a one-week horizon, the empirical coverage frequency of our interval forecasts is close to the nominal credible level. Weekly forecasts from our model are published at https://laurayuliu.com/covid19-panel-forecast/.
使用 R 包 bpvars 的贝叶斯面板向量自回归预测
The R package bpvars was designed to forecast employment, unemployment, and labour market participation rates of 189 countries. However, it is generally applicable to dynamic panel data due to the flexibility of its modelling framework and robust coding. It includes a family of Bayesian hierarchical panel Vector Autoregressions (VARs) that are characterised by: (i) country-specific VAR models (ii) with their parameters' priors centred around their global counterparts, and…
超高维多国 VAR 的近似贝叶斯推断与预测
Panel Vector Autoregressions (PVARs) are a popular tool for analyzing multi-country datasets. However, the number of estimated parameters can be enormous, leading to computational and statistical issues. In this paper, we develop fast Bayesian methods for estimating PVARs using integrated rotated Gaussian approximations. We exploit the fact that domestic information is often more important than international information and group the coefficients accordingly. Fast…
This paper considers the problem of forecasting a collection of short time series using cross‐sectional information in panel data. We construct point predictors using Tweedie's formula for the posterior mean of heterogeneous coefficients under a correlated random effects distribution. This formula utilizes cross‐sectional information to transform the unit‐specific (quasi) maximum likelihood estimator into an approximation of the posterior mean under a prior distribution that…
用于衡量气候尾部风险的软非交叉贝叶斯面板分位数回归
We develop a hierarchical Bayesian panel quantile regression model in which unit-specific coefficient paths are smoothed across quantiles by Gaussian processes, while a common time effect absorbs aggregate shocks. Componentwise-monotone Bernstein polynomials, perturbed by unit-specific deviations, deliver soft noncrossing, and we provide identification conditions together with a bound on the crossing probability. Applying the model to 33 countries over 1979--2023, we find…
面板数据预测:估计不确定性与参数异质性的权衡
We provide a comprehensive examination of the predictive performance of panel forecasting methods based on individual, pooling, fixed effects, and empirical Bayes estimation, and propose optimal weights for forecast combination schemes. We consider linear panel data models, allowing for weakly exogenous regressors and correlated heterogeneity. We quantify the gains from exploiting panel data and demonstrate how forecasting performance depends on the degree of parameter…
