Summary This paper develops a Bayesian variant of global vector autoregressive (B‐GVAR) models to forecast an international set of macroeconomic and financial variables. We propose a set of hierarchical priors and compare the predictive performance of B‐GVAR models in terms of point and density forecasts for one‐quarter‐ahead and four‐quarter‐ahead forecast horizons. We find that forecasts can be improved by employing a global framework and hierarchical priors which induce country‐specific degrees of shrinkage on the coefficients of the GVAR model. Forecasts from various B‐GVAR specifications tend to outperform forecasts from a naive univariate model, a global model without shrinkage on the parameters and country‐specific vector autoregressions. We tackle the issue of producing point, sign, and density forecasts for the monthly real price of carbon in the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). We show that Bayesian Vector Autoregressive (BVAR) models augmented with factors based on macroeconomic and financial variables yield improvements in point and density forecasting performance, with the largest point-forecast gains emerging at intermediate and longer horizons. In particular, the one-factor BVAR model…
具有 Cholesky 随机波动率的大型 VAR:贝叶斯推断、在线预测与模型选择
We consider $K$-dimensional Bayesian vector autoregressions (BVARs) with Cholesky stochastic volatility (SV), in which the innovation covariance matrix is a lower-triangular linear transform of $K$ independent univariate SV processes. Such models are widely used in empirical macroeconomics to capture time-varying uncertainty and improve forecast accuracy, but the cost of posterior simulation is the binding constraint on the size of the system, and a major bottleneck for…
面向二元、删失与计数变量的大型贝叶斯VAR
We extend the vector autoregression (VAR) to model binary, censored, count and unrestricted variables jointly, treating missing observations of any type in the same way. Each restricted observation is linked to a latent Gaussian variable, so that the standard machinery for VARs, such as shrinkage priors, stochastic volatility and outlier components, applies directly to the VAR for the latent variables. The latent variables have a truncated normal conditional distribution…

We propose a Bayesian generalized network autoregressive (BGNAR) model for multivariate time series whose component series are associated with the nodes of a known network. The proposed framework combines the parsimonious network structure of the generalized network autoregressive (GNAR) model with structured shrinkage and persistence priors adapted from Bayesian vector autoregressive (BVAR) modeling. We adapt Minnesota-type shrinkage to both own-lag and network-lag…

We present a suite of R packages for macroeconomic forecasting that leverages advanced Bayesian, structural, multivariate, dynamic, hierarchical, non-linear, and non-Gaussian models. The suite enables both structural and predictive analyses, and is adapted to time series data across various types, dimensions, and sampling frequencies. Each additional feature increases computational complexity. To address this challenge, our software design incorporates a carefully curated…

Vector autoregressions (VARs) are vulnerable to dynamic misspecification, forcing researchers to navigate complex bias-variance trade-offs when forecasting or estimating impulse response functions (IRFs). We derive novel, task-specific selection criteria -- PC for forecasting and IRFC for IRF estimation -- based on asymptotically unbiased estimates of frequentist risk under local dynamic misspecification. These criteria give empirical researchers a fully data-driven and…
