Researchers and practitioners often wish to measure treatment effects in settings where units interact via markets and recommendation systems. In these settings, units are affected by certain shared states, like prices, algorithmic recommendations or social signals. We formalize this structure, calling it shared-state interference, and argue that our formulation captures many relevant applied settings. Our key modeling assumption is that individuals' potential outcomes are independent conditional on the shared state. We then prove an extension of a double machine learning (DML) theorem providing conditions for achieving efficient inference under shared-state interference. We also instantiate our general theorem in several models of interest where it is possible to efficiently estimate the average direct effect (ADE) or global average treatment effect (GATE).
In spatial observational studies, treatment assignment and outcomes often exhibit spatial dependence patterns, and treatment effects may vary across space and subpopulations due to both measured and unmeasured spatially structured confounders. Accounting for spatial dependence while estimating heterogeneous treatment effects (HTEs) is a central task in spatial causal inference. Causal Bayesian additive regression tree methods are popular nonparametric methods for modeling…
Treatment noncompliance is pervasive in infectious disease cluster-randomized trials. Although all individuals within a cluster are assigned the same treatment condition, the treatment uptake status may vary across individuals due to noncompliance. We propose a semiparametric framework to evaluate the individual compliance effect and network assignment effect within principal stratum exhibiting different patterns of noncompliance. The individual compliance effect captures…
Network interference complicates A/B testing on online platforms, such as social networks and marketplaces, where causal methods based on single experiments often suffer from significant bias due to complex interference patterns. This paper demonstrates the statistical benefits of merging data from multiple experiments with varying treatment proportions. Sequential experimentation with increasing traffic, or ramp-up, is widely used in tech companies for risk management and…
Causal mediation analysis is typically formulated under no interference, an assumption often violated in networked populations. We develop a nonparametric framework for a single large observed network that allows simultaneous treatment and mediator spillovers and high-dimensional network confounding. Exposure and mediator mappings define causal estimands without restricting the true interference mechanism, separating own from spillover effects without prespecified…
Estimating causal effects under interference is a common problem in social science and economics. However, it is challenging due to the complex dependency structure induced by network connections. In this paper, we propose GAUGER, a Generalized regression Adjustment framework via Graph-weighted Exposure-level Residualization for design-based causal inference under general interference. We first reveal a surprising mismatch between accuracy and efficiency in this setting:…
We study design-based causal inference for edge-level outcomes in directed networks under dyadic interference. In this setting, outcomes are defined on directed edges and depend on the joint treatment assignments of pairs of units, inducing a complex dependence structure that invalidates standard estimation and inference procedures developed for node-level data. We construct Horvitz--Thompson estimators for a general class of edge-level causal effects and establish their…
