The purpose of this article is to give a survey 1 1I should like to thank Professor Wolfowits for pointing out the need for such a survey. of certain methods available for finding confidence limits when nothing is assumed about the population from which a sample has been drawn except possibly that it has a continuous distribution. The following three cases are treated: a confidence band for the unknown cumulative distribution function, a confidence interval for the proportion of a population for which the variate is smaller (or larger) than a given value, and confidence intervals for quantiles. The results have been known for many years, but have often been accessible only to those who were able to follow rather involved mathematical arguments. It is the purpose of this paper to state certain important results without referring to any mathematical proofs.
We first provide inference on the quantile function of the bid distribution in firstprice or descending auctions, and the quantile function of the value distribution in second-price or ascending auctions, with a known number of bidders with symmetric independent private values. Specifically, we provide finite-sample, nonparametric, tuning parameter-free, uniform confidence bands for these quantile functions when observing only the transaction price. We also show how these…
This paper presents uniform estimation and inference theory for a large class of nonparametric partitioning-based M-estimators. The main theoretical results include: (i) uniform consistency for convex and nonconvex objective functions; (ii) rate-optimal uniform Bahadur representations; (iii) rate-optimal uniform (and mean square) convergence rates; (iv) valid strong approximations and feasible uniform inference methods; and (v) extensions to functional transformations of…
We study inference for linear quantile regression with two-way clustered data. Using a separately exchangeable array framework and a projection decomposition of the quantile score, we characterize regime-dependent convergence rates and establish a self-normalized Gaussian approximation. We propose a two-way cluster-robust sandwich variance estimator with a kernel-based density ``bread'' and a projection-matched ``meat'', and prove consistency and validity of inference in…

In causal inference with ordinal outcomes, several interpretable estimands are functions of the probability that the potential outcome under one treatment is larger than that under another treatment for the same unit. This probability depends on the joint distribution of both potential outcomes and is generally not identifiable. Existing work has focused on sharp bounds of this probability based on partial identification, but bounds are often too wide to be informative. We…
This paper develops a unified framework for the identification, estimation, and uniform inference of local treatment effects (LTEs) in sharp regression kink designs (RKDs). These LTEs quantify the effect of a marginal change in the treatment at the kink point on various features of the outcome distribution. The identification strategy applies to Hadamard-differentiable functionals of the outcome distribution -- including means, quantiles, and inequality measures -- and…
