Factor model methods recently have become extremely popular in the theory and practice of large panels of time series data. Those methods rely on various factor models which all are particular cases of the Generalized Dynamic Factor Model (GDFM) introduced in Forniet al. (2000). That paper, however, rests on Brillinger’s dynamic principal components. The corresponding estimators are two-sided filters whose performance at the end of the observation period or for forecasting purposes is rather poor. No such problem arises with estimators based on standard principal components, which have been dominant in this literature. On the other hand, those estimators require the assumption that the space spanned by the factors has finite dimension. In the present paper, we argue that such an assumption is extremely restrictive and potentially quite harmful. Elaborating upon recent results by Anderson and Deistler (2008a, b) on singular stationary processes with rational spectrum, we obtain one-sided representations for the GDFM without assuming finite dimension of the factor space. Construction of the corresponding estimators is also briefly outlined. In a companion paper, we establish consistency and rates for such estimators, and provide Monte Carlo results further motivating our approach.
高维矩阵值时间序列的贝叶斯动态因子模型
We introduce a class of Bayesian dynamic factor models for matrix-valued time series, with autoregressive factor dynamics and idiosyncratic components that allow stochastic volatility, outliers, and a Kronecker-structured covariance capturing cross-row and cross-column correlation. Exploiting the matrix structure, we make these richly parameterized models tractable in high dimensions and develop an efficient Gibbs sampler for estimation. For model comparison, we propose a…
FNETS:高维时间序列的因子调整网络估计与预测
–We propose FNETS, a methodology for network estimation and forecasting of high-dimensional time series exhibiting strong serial- and cross-sectional correlations. We operate under a factor-adjusted vector autoregressive (VAR) model which, after accounting for pervasive co-movements of the variables by common factors, models the remaining idiosyncratic dynamic dependence between the variables as a sparse VAR process. Network estimation of FNETS consists of three steps: (i)…
监督式动态主成分分析:多预测变量下的线性动态预测
This paper proposes a novel dynamic forecasting method using a new supervised Principal Component Analysis (PCA) when a large number of predictors are available. The new supervised PCA provides an effective way to bridge the gap between predictors and the target variable of interest by scaling and combining the predictors and their lagged values, resulting in an effective dynamic forecasting. Unlike the traditional diffusion-index approach, which does not learn the…
We present new results for the likelihood‐based analysis of the dynamic factor model. The latent factors are modelled by linear dynamic stochastic processes. The idiosyncratic disturbance series are specified as autoregressive processes with mutually correlated innovations. The new results lead to computationally efficient procedures for the estimation of the factors and for the parameter estimation by maximum likelihood methods. We also present the implications of our…
高维时间序列的带通滤波
The paper deals with the construction of a synthetic indicator of economic growth, obtained by projecting a quarterly measure of aggregate economic activity, namely gross domestic product (GDP), into the space spanned by a finite number of smooth principal components, representative of the medium-to-long-run component of economic growth of a high-dimensional time series, available at the monthly frequency. The smooth principal components result from applying a…
以平稳与非平稳混合因子预测非平稳时间序列
We develop a method for constructing prediction intervals for a nonstationary variable, such as GDP. The method uses a Factor Augmented Regression (FAR) model. The predictors in the model include a small number of factors generated to extract most of the information in a set of panel data on a large number of macroeconomic variables that are considered to be potential predictors. The novelty of this article is that it provides a method and justification for a mixture of…
