A common experimental research design is one in which individuals are randomly allocated into groups that then interact under different group-level treatment conditions. We develop design-based inference for such "group interaction" experiments, covering scenarios in which groups are either fixed or randomly formed and in which potential outcomes are either fixed relative to others' group assignments or subject to interference. For each scenario, we characterize the causal estimand that the design targets and the inferential strategy appropriate to it. Working in a sparse-sampling asymptotic regime, we show that cluster-robust inference remains consistent and accounts for dependencies from various sources when interference is present, delivering valid inference on marginalized exposure effects. When interference is absent and groups are formed randomly, the design reduces to an individually randomized experiment, and individual-level heteroskedasticity-robust inference suffices for the average treatment effect. Our results on the asymptotic distribution of commonly used estimators rely on a novel coupling strategy that may be useful for design-based inference in other complex experiments.
We develop standard errors for estimates of causal effects in settings where the distribution of treatment exposures is known but potentially exhibits complicated dependence patterns across units. Such dependence arises, for example, in settings with spillovers/interference across units or when the treatment assignment is spatially correlated. Our variance estimator generalizes several properties of the Neyman variance estimator for completely randomized experiments to…
Estimating causal effects is challenging with observational data due to the lack of exchangeability, and is further complicated with spatial data. In real-life applications such as agricultural and environmental studies, unobserved spatial factors (spatial confounding, SC) and interactions of units in nearby locations (spatial interference, SI) commonly occur jointly, yet existing parametric methods address them separately. We develop a unified framework that treats both…
We study randomized experiments involving two interacting populations, such as buyers and sellers in a marketplace. In the two-sided experiments we consider, we randomize the two populations separately and independently. For a pair consisting of one member from each population, the two assignments jointly determine one of four exposure conditions. Under a local interference assumption, we consider a broad class of linear estimands, including total, interaction, and buyer-…
Causal mediation analysis is typically formulated under no interference, an assumption often violated in networked populations. We develop a nonparametric framework for a single large observed network that allows simultaneous treatment and mediator spillovers and high-dimensional network confounding. Exposure and mediator mappings define causal estimands without restricting the true interference mechanism, separating own from spillover effects without prespecified…
Neyman
We propose a framework, the Neyman Jackknife, for conservative variance estimation in finite-population causal inference under interference. Our approach provides a general, flexible blueprint that enables conservative variance estimation whenever we are able to recompute our target estimator with some treatment assignments omitted. In classical settings, our approach recovers estimators closely related to the Neyman estimator under SUTVA and the Newey-West HAC variance…
In causal inference, interference occurs when the treatment of one unit may affect the outcomes of other units. The goal of this work is to serve as a guide to the use of linear outcome modeling for estimating causal effects in settings where interference may pose a challenge to identification and estimation, such as spatial and network data. We demonstrate that, under a linear model, causal effects of binary and continuous treatments can be identified in terms of regression…
