Fueled in part by recent applications in neuroscience, the multivariate Hawkes process has become a popular tool for modeling the network of interactions among high-dimensional point process data. While evaluating the uncertainty of the network estimates is critical in scientific applications, existing methodological and theoretical work has primarily addressed estimation. To bridge this gap, we develop a new statistical inference procedure for high-dimensional Hawkes processes. The key ingredient for the inference procedure is a new concentration inequality on the first- and second-order statistics for integrated stochastic processes, which summarize the entire history of the process. Combining recent martingale central limit theorem with the new concentration inequality, we then characterize the convergence rate of the test statistics in a continuous time domain. Finally, to account for potential non-stationarity of the process in practice, we extend our statistical inference procedure to a flexible class of Hawkes processes with time-varying background intensities and unknown transition functions. The finite sample validity of the inferential tools is illustrated via extensive simulations and further applied to a neuron spike train dataset. Supplementary materials for this article are available online, including a standardized description of the materials available for reproducing the work.
动态空间自回归模型的推断与变点检测
We analyze a varying-coefficient spatial autoregressive model with spatial fixed effects. One salient feature of the model is the incorporation of multiple spatial weight matrices through their linear combinations with varying coefficients, which help solve the problem of choosing the most “correct” one for applied econometricians who often face the availability of multiple expert spatial weight matrices. We estimate and make inferences on the model coefficients and…
网络变系数模型
We propose a novel network-varying coefficient model that extends traditional varying coefficient models to accommodate network data. The main idea is to model the regression coefficients as the functions of the latent “locations” of network nodes that drive formation of the network. To estimate the model, we identify the latent “locations” via the latent space model and then develop an iterative projected gradient descent algorithm by optimizing the network parameters and…

This paper introduces a framework to analyze time-varying spillover effects in panel data. We consider panel models where a unit's outcome depends not only on its own characteristics (private effects) but also on the characteristics of other units (spillover effects). The linkage of units is allowed to be latent and may shift at an unknown breakpoint. We propose a novel procedure to estimate the breakpoint, linkage structure, spillover and private effects. We address the…

We congratulate Prof. Crane and Dr Xu for introducing a very interesting and appealing statistical model for Markovian network growth. The PAPER model enjoys several qualities. In particular, (i) it strikes a rare balance between analytic elegance and tractability, and expressive power; (ii) it allows for practicable algorithms for statistical inference that scale to networks of very large size, and (iii) it is very flexible and can be readily generalized to model a variety…

Real-world public health policies are often enacted by local jurisdictions, but their effects can ripple through connected populations. For causal evaluation, this creates a difficult spatiotemporal problem: intermittent policy updates create path-level treatments, and because spillover depends on neighboring treatment paths along with the focal-unit's own history, controlling time-varying confounding requires high-dimensional, multimodal information from both sources. To…

Estimating how different brain regions communicate with each other using EEG data is valuable both for medical research and clinical diagnosis. This involves quantifying the statistical dependencies among the activities of different brain areas, captured by the time-varying electric field recorded by scalp sensors. These dependencies can vary within and across individuals also in relationship with external factors such as age, mental state, or disease severity. Motivated by…
