We study the problem of determining the location of an emergency transmitter in a downed aircraft. The observations are bearings read at fixed stations. A Bayesian approach, yielding a posterior map of probable locations, seems reasonable in this situation. We therefore develop conjugate prior distributions for the von Mises distribution, which we use to compute a posterior distribution of the location. An approximation to the posterior distribution yields accurate, rapidly computable answers. A common problem with this kind of data is the possibility that signals will reflect off orographic terrain features, resulting in wild bearings. Such bearings can affect the posterior distribution severely. We develop a sensitivity analysis, based on the idea of predictive distribution, to reject wild bearings. The method, which is based on an asymptotic argument, nonetheless performs well in a small simulation study. When the preceding approximation is used, the sensitivity analysis is practical in terms of computation time.
Principal stratification (PS) is a commonly used approach for understanding the mechanisms through which a treatment affects an outcome. The goal of this work is to extend the PS framework to studies with continuous treatments, which introduces a number of both challenges and opportunities in terms of defining causal effects and performing inference. This manuscript provides multiple key methodological contributions: 1) we introduce principal causal estimands for continuous…

We propose Multivariate Lévy Adaptive B-Spline Regression (MLABS), a Bayesian nonparametric regression model designed to capture nonlinear effects, interactions, and locally varying features of multivariate functions. MLABS represents the regression function as a random sum of low-order tensor-product B-spline basis functions under a finite Lévy random measure prior. The resulting representation adapts to the complexity and local structure of the regression function while…

Gaussian processes (GPs) are widely used across machine learning, spatial statistics, time-series analysis, optimization, Bayesian statistics, and scientific applications. A central component of a GP model is its kernel, which is typically specified through a parametric family. Among the most widely used choices is the radial basis function (RBF), also known as the squared exponential or Gaussian kernel, owing to its simple form, smoothness, and flexibility. In practice, the…

A standard assumption in the Bayesian estimation of linear regression models is that the regressors are exogenous in the sense that they are uncorrelated with the model error term. In practice, however, this assumption can be invalid. In this article, using the exponentially tilted empirical likelihood (ETEL) framework, we develop a Bayes factor test for endogeneity that compares a base model that is correctly specified under exogeneity but misspecified under endogeneity…

We study the fundamental limits of convex-regularized estimation in high-dimensional linear regression with right-rotationally invariant design matrices. We show that the asymptotic risks of convex-penalized least squares estimators are lower bounded by the risk of an approximate message passing algorithm known as Bayes VAMP, and we further characterize when the lower bound is attainable. As a technical ingredient in the proof of our lower bound theorem, we characterize the…

In this paper, we develop an asymptotically normal estimator for the value of policy improvement (VPI) under adaptively collected data. This value, which is defined as the gap between the value of the best treatment policy in a class and that of a baseline policy, gauges whether or not it is worth deploying a personalized treatment policy. Building an estimator for the VPI is naturally more difficult than estimating the value of a fixed policy. This is because, in addition…
