Measuring systemic risk has been an important topic in recent research on risk management. Adrian and Brunnermeier (2016) pioneered the CoVaR measure for systemic risk, which is defined as the conditional quantile of system loss given some state predictors and one stress event of an individual loss at a certain risk level. They proposed to estimate CoVaR by a two-quantile-regression approach, which is simple and easy to implement in practice, but without stating or developing the necessary asymptotic theory. In this paper, we develop tests to reveal that using the classical regularity condition in quantile regressions for the two-quantile-regression model may be unrealistic by revisiting the datasets in Adrian and Brunnermeier (2016). Under the proposed weaker conditions, we further develop the asymptotic theory of the CoVaR inference and introduce a random weighted bootstrap method to quantify the inference uncertainty. We examine the finite sample performance of the proposed tests in terms of size and power, as well as the coverage probabilities of confidence intervals for CoVaR. Finally, we demonstrate the CoVaR inference across financial institutions and time.

This paper proposes valid inference tools, based on self-normalization, in time series expected shortfall regressions and, as a corollary, also in quantile regressions. Extant methods for such time series regressions, based on a bootstrap or direct estimation of the long-run variance, are computationally more involved, require the choice of tuning parameters and have serious size distortions when the regression errors are strongly serially dependent. In contrast, our…

This paper provides comprehensive simulation results on the finite sample properties of the Diebold-Mariano (DM) test by Diebold and Mariano (1995) and the model confidence set (MCS) testing procedure by Hansen et al. (2011) applied to the asymmetric loss functions specific to financial tail risk forecasts, such as Value-at-Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall (ES). We focus on statistical loss functions that are strictly consistent in the sense of Gneiting (2011a). We find…

Systemic risk measures (SRM) quantify the risk of a system induced by the possible distress of any of its components. Applications in economics and finance are numerous. We define a general dynamic framework for the risk factors, allowing us to obtain explicit expressions of the corresponding dynamic SRM. We deduce an easy-to-implement statistical approach which, based on semi-parametric assumptions, reduces to estimating univariate location-scale models and to computing…

We propose a general purpose confidence interval procedure (CIP) for statistical functionals constructed using data from a stationary time series. The procedures we propose are based on derived distribution-free analogues of the $χ^2$ and Student's $t$ random variables for the statistical functional context, and hence apply in a wide variety of settings including quantile estimation, gradient estimation, M-estimation, CVAR-estimation, and arrival process rate estimation,…

Correct specification of a conditional quantile model implies that a particular conditional moment is equal to zero. We nonparametrically estimate the conditional moment function via series regression and test whether it is identically zero using uniform functional inference. Our approach is theoretically justified via a strong Gaussian approximation for statistics of growing dimensions in a general time series setting. We propose a novel bootstrap method in this nonstandard…

We compute the value-at-risk of financial losses by fitting a generalized Pareto distribution to exceedances over a threshold. Following the common practice of setting the threshold as high sample quantiles, we show that, for both independent observations and time-series data, the asymptotic variance for the maximum likelihood estimation depends on the choice of threshold, unlike the existing study of using a divergent threshold. We also propose a random weighted bootstrap…
