The synthetic control method (SCM) is widely used for causal inference with panel data, particularly when the number of treated units is small. It relies on the stable unit treatment value assumption (SUTVA), ruling out spillover effects. However, interventions often affect not only treated but also untreated units. This study proposes a novel panel data method that extends standard SCM to account for spillovers and estimate both treatment and spillover effects. The approach extends the SCM framework by incorporating a spatial autoregressive (SAR) panel data model that captures spillover patterns across units. We also develop a Bayesian inference procedure using horseshoe priors for regularization. We apply the proposed method to two empirical studies: (i) evaluating the effect of the California tobacco tax on cigarette consumption, and (ii) assessing the economic impact of the 2011 Sudan division on GDP per capita.
Synthetic control methods are commonly used in panel data settings to evaluate the effect of an intervention. In many of these cases, the treated and control units correspond to spatial units such as regions or neighborhoods. Our approach addresses the challenge of understanding how an intervention applied at specific locations influences the surrounding area. Traditional synthetic control applications may struggle with defining the effective area of impact, the extent of…
Synthetic control methods are widely used for policy evaluation, but most existing approaches rule out interference among units, compromising validity when such effects are present. We develop a framework that accommodates contaminated donor pools and unknown interference patterns through two stages: factor-model adjustment for unobserved confounding, followed by robust regression in which direct and interference effects appear as a sparse outlier component. We study two…
We propose a generalization of the synthetic controls and synthetic interventions methodology to incorporate network interference. We consider the estimation of unit-specific potential outcomes from panel data in the presence of spillover across units and unobserved confounding. Key to our approach is a novel latent factor model that takes into account network interference and generalizes the factor models typically used in panel data settings. We propose an estimator,…
This paper develops a unified theoretical framework for detecting and estimating boundaries in treatment effects across both spatial and temporal dimensions. We formalize the concept of treatment effect boundaries as structural parameters characterizing regime transitions where causal effects cease to operate. Building on reaction-diffusion models of information propagation, we establish conditions under which spatial and temporal boundaries share common dynamics governed by…
I study how first sizable industry entries reshape local and neighboring labor markets in Puerto Rico. Using over a decade of quarterly municipality--industry data (2014Q1--2025Q1), I identify ``first sizable entries'' as large, persistent jumps in establishments, covered employment, and wage bill, and treat these as shocks to local industry presence at the municipio--industry level. Methodologically, I combine staggered-adoption difference-in-differences estimators that are…
Actor-partner interdependence models (APIMs) describe how one member's exposure is associated with that member's and the partner's outcomes, but actor and partner coefficients are causal only under additional design and identification assumptions. We formulate APIM-style questions as dyadic target trials under within-dyad interference and make three links between the associational and causal formulations explicit. First, under joint exchangeability, positivity, and a…
