Econometric applications with multi-way clustering often feature a small number of effective clusters or heavy-tailed data, making standard cluster-robust and bootstrap inference unreliable in finite samples. In this paper, we develop a framework for finite-sample valid permutation inference in linear regression with multi-way clustering under an assumption of conditional exchangeability of the errors. Our assumption is closely related to the notion of separate exchangeability studied in earlier work, but can be more realistic in many economic settings as it imposes minimal restrictions on the covariate distribution. We construct permutation tests of significance that are valid in finite samples and establish theoretical power guarantees, in contrast to existing methods that are justified only asymptotically. We also extend our methodology to settings with missing data and derive power results that reveal phase transitions in detectability. Through simulation studies, we demonstrate that the proposed tests maintain correct size and competitive power, while standard cluster-robust and bootstrap procedures can exhibit substantial size distortions.

Data collection is often costly or logistically demanding, limiting both the questions researchers can pursue and how precisely they can answer them. Prediction-powered inference (PPI) can reduce the amount of data needed for precise parameter estimation by combining labeled data with machine learning predictions. However, ignoring dependence within clusters can produce confidence intervals that cover the true parameter less often than their nominal rate. We introduce…

This paper develops a general two-point dependent wild bootstrap (DWB) for weakly dependent estimating equations. Its key feature is that the two-point marginal distribution and the latent serial dependence specification can be chosen separately. The construction combines a normalized two-point distribution with a stationary latent Gaussian process via a Gaussian copula transformation, includes dependent Rademacher and Mammen multipliers, and nests the classical iid…
空间混杂与干扰下直接因果效应估计的统一框架及 R 包 spaci
Estimating causal effects is challenging with observational data due to the lack of exchangeability, and is further complicated with spatial data. In real-life applications such as agricultural and environmental studies, unobserved spatial factors (spatial confounding, SC) and interactions of units in nearby locations (spatial interference, SI) commonly occur jointly, yet existing parametric methods address them separately. We develop a unified framework that treats both…
广义线性模型中多层模型与固定效应方法的比较
We extend prior work comparing linear multilevel models (MLM) and fixed effect (FE) models to the generalized linear model (GLM) setting, where the coefficient on a treatment variable is of primary interest. This leads to three insights. (i) First, as in the linear setting, MLM can be thought of as a regularized form of FE (RegFE). This explains why group-level confounding can greatly bias MLM's treatment coefficient estimates. However, unlike the linear setting, there is…

The causal inference literature has traditionally focused on estimating the mean of the potential outcome, whereas evaluating how a treatment affects the entire outcome distribution can provide additional information in biomedical research. Quantile treatment effect (QTE) captures such distributional differences, particularly when outcomes are skewed. However, existing approaches for estimating QTE make distributional assumptions about the outcome and are thus sensitive to…

It has become standard for empirical studies to conduct inference robust to cluster dependence and heterogeneity. With a small number of clusters, the normal approximation for the $t$-statistics of regression coefficients may be poor. This paper tackles this problem using a critical value based on the conditional Cramér-Edgeworth expansion for the $t$-statistics. The proposed critical value guarantees third-order refinement, and it does not require resampling because it is a…
