In a nonrandom sample or a nonrandomized comparison of treated and control groups, methods are developed for displaying the sensitivity of confidence intervals for population quantiles to the magnitude of the departure from random selection. Quantiles of a single distribution and for a shift in two distributions are both discussed. These confidence intervals are based on a new inequality for the distribution of the number of successes in a nonrandom sample or nonrandomized comparison. The inequality has additional applications. In particular, it greatly accelerates the computations in a sensitivity analysis for the Mantel–Haenszel statistic in a 2 × 2 × S contingency table. Examples include a nonrandom collection of blood samples from a town with comparatively high levels of radon gas, an observational study of chromosome damage from mercury, and a study of the drug allopurinol as a cause of skin rash. The proof of the inequality makes use of Savage's lattice for ranks and Holley's inequality, which gives sufficient conditions for stochastic ordering in a lattice.
The conditional average treatment effect (CATE) is frequently estimated in clinical studies to refute a homogeneous treatment effect hypothesis. Under this regime, all patients making up the population experience identical benefit from a given treatment relative to a comparator. Uncovering heterogeneous treatment effects through inference about the CATE, however, requires that covariates truly modifying the treatment effect be reliably collected at baseline. CATE-based…
预测处理效应分布:协变量调整方法
Important questions for impact evaluation require knowledge not only of average effects, but of the distribution of treatment effects. The inability to observe individual counterfactuals makes answering these empirical questions challenging. I propose an inference approach for points of the distribution of treatment effects that uses predicted counterfactuals through covariate adjustment. I provide finite-sample valid inference using sample-splitting and asymptotically valid…

One-to-one matching without replacement is a classical approach to constructing comparable treated and control samples in the design of observational studies. It pairs each treated unit with a distinct control while minimizing a covariate distance objective. With continuous covariates, the matched pairs generally remain inexact, which contributes to bias in downstream analysis. Its key theoretical properties, such as the resulting imbalance between matched pairs and when it…

We study estimation and inference for a partially identified parameter whose identified set depends on a first-stage nuisance parameter that must itself be estimated. Combining the criterion-function approach with the theory of Neyman-orthogonal moments that underlies double/debiased machine learning, we propose a two-step procedure: the point-identified nuisance is estimated by flexible machine-learning methods, and the set-identified target is recovered as a level set of a…

ABSTRACT This article partially identifies population treatment effects in observational data under both non‐random treatment assignment and sample selection. Bounds are provided for both average and quantile population treatment effects, combining assumptions for the selected and the non‐selected subsamples. We show how different assumptions help narrow identification regions, and we illustrate our methods by partially identifying the effect of maternal education on the…
条件影响函数
There are many nonparametric objects of interest that are functionals of a conditional distribution, such as average treatment effects conditional on a low-dimensional set of covariates. We define a conditional influence function (CIF) as the Gateaux derivative of a conditional parameter with respect to perturbations of the conditional law of a single observation given the conditioning variable. CIFs generalize classical influence functions and can be used to (i) construct…
