Relational Event Models (REMs) provide valuable insights into the dynamics of longitudinal social networks. Yet, the vast availability of potential predictors for a dyad's event rate poses the risk of selecting irrelevant variables and specifying an overfitted model that does not generalize to new data. Despite the recent popularity of Bayesian regularization methods to address this, there has not been a systematic evaluation of the performance of Exact Bayesian Regularization (EBR) and Approximate Bayesian Regularization (ABR) against standard Maximum Likelihood (ML) procedures commonly used for REMs. To address this, we conduct a simulation study in which directed Relational Event History (REH) data is generated with endogenous and exogenous effects of varying strength and compare the performance of (a) unregularized ML estimation, (b) ABR through normal approximations of the likelihood with Ridge and Horseshoe priors, and (c) EBR with Horseshoe priors. We find that threshold-based criteria applied to ABR and EBR with Horseshoe priors outperform univariate selection using p-values from ML estimation in variable selection accuracy. Regarding predictive performance, ABR with Ridge priors and EBR with Horseshoe priors outperform ML REMs, particularly for small sample sizes. Given only small gains with large computational burdens when using EBR, we therefore advise researchers to use ABR with a suitable prior.

Estimating network formation models with degree heterogeneity raises two problems in empirical networks. First, agents that send no links, receive no links, or link to all remaining agents can make the fixed-effects MLE fail to exist. Trimming these agents changes the estimation sample and induces selection bias. Second, the incidental-parameter problem biases common parameters and average partial effects. We resolve both issues through a penalized likelihood approach. Our…
网络辅助的高维因子模型估计
This article takes advantage of group-level heterogeneity and network cohesion phenomenon to improve the estimation accuracy of approximate factor models. As large heterogeneous panels become available, a grouped pattern of unobserved heterogeneity in the panel data is highlighted. Clustering of factor loadings provides a solution to model group-level heterogeneity. Moreover, networks are frequently observed in economics and finance, which capture the interconnectivity…

We introduce a semiparametric latent space model for analyzing longitudinal network data. The model consists of a static latent space component and a time-varying node-specific baseline component. We develop a semiparametric efficient score equation for the latent space parameter by adjusting for the baseline nuisance component. Estimation is accomplished through a one-step update estimator and an appropriately penalized maximum likelihood estimator. We derive oracle error…

This paper explores the estimation of a panel data model with cross-sectional interaction that is flexible both in its approach to specifying the network of connections between cross-sectional units, and in controlling for unobserved heterogeneity. It is assumed that there are different sources of information available on a network, which can be represented in the form of multiple weights matrices. These matrices may reflect observed links, different measures of…

In infectious disease transmission, regression and variable selection for time-to-event outcomes are complicated by transmission-induced dependence that violates standard independence assumptions. Pairwise survival analysis addresses this dependence by modeling contact intervals in ordered pairs, defined as the time from the onset of infectiousness in the pair's first individual to their first infectious contact with the second individual. We propose a penalized pairwise…

Likelihood-based network models are often fitted under links' independence and low-order constraints, while empirical networks frequently exhibit systematic higher-order structures such as triangles and wedges, characterizing the observed clustering patterns. Real-world core-periphery networks such as the interbank market or the air transportation system represent key examples, with cores displaying complex and nonlinear features. We formalize Penalized Likelihood with…
